I get the exact opposite. Moonsorrow is much more riff-focused than these guys in general, and this album in particular.

Moonsorrow varies from buzzing guitars that support big synth leads to chonky riff fests, often within the same song (see: Jotunheim)
so I think you're both right c:

This is one of the catchiest black metal albums I've heard and it's because every single song is a riff orgy. I don't get how people are saying this album isn't riff focused

Yeah this band has always been driven by the riffs tbh.

What gives them that Havukruunu sound? Someone who knows about music tell me. And I'm not talking about the chanting or folky bits. I just need to hear 2 seconds of music and I'm like "yep, those are Havukruunu guitars."

Is this a pop quiz?

I mean, there's riffs here but they're mostly just ok and are getting overshadowed by the vocals/choruses and the solos (which are also just ok).
I listened to Uinuos right after this yesterday. It's way better.

I tell you hwat, they have a weird and instantly-recognizable production though. it's so thin but it somehow works.

Yeah, the sound work in Uinuos Syömein Sota could be called "thin", because so many elements were crammed into the arrangements, but the new one is an improvement imho.
Also, the sound work is second to none with respect to 99% of metal productions of the last ten years, whereas it fares pretty well with older, more rich sounding productions.
The sound of the first two albums is much thicker though.
On another note, people who like this, owe it to themselves to stage a discog run of these guys. Recently did it, and boy was it a blast.
And I should check Moonsorrow.

The funny thing about those outfits, is that I knew them by name in the '90s, but never brought myself in the position to buy their albums, not even in random, like I did in numerous cases.
In the naughts, I became overwhelmed by post metal, heavy music and experimental stuff in general, among other things.
Better late than never.

hell yeah! you'll absolutely love Windir, their discog is immaculate. for Thyrfing I'd recommend their first 4, especially Urkfraft. enjoy the ride m/
