That song ranking would be very similar to mine! Maybe Detonate and Between Directions a bit higher and What we become a bit lower.
Yess, glad you liked Cemetery Skyline! Scratches that Mikael clean vocal itch

Felt like DT crossed by like... HIM. Really cool vibe

I'm a huge melodeath guy and I have no desire to jam this lol. I probably will eventually but yeah

I just can't get behind the idea this band is supposed to represent. The self-plagiarisation and idea to resurrect a sound that Stanne was never a part of (and clearly doesn't fit in), just to be a "brand new" de facto legacy act with no intention of exploring anything new is just... idk. Not for me I guess? The record feels like what I imagine playing the re-released past WoW expansions in 2025 does. But I guess everything has a crowd. I really love this bunch of shabby mofos for their past contributions to the genre (Engelin excepted, how the hell he keeps popping up in In Flames-related stuff is insane to me, yeah I know he was their touring guitarist for a while, but god). this and the last one just scream desperation to me.

i probably engaged way too seriously in something that clearly doesn't take itself seriously at all tho and should just take a chill pill and be like "hey, this is fun", but is it though? it's literally 2 bit arcade mdm

"Stanne was never a part of (and clearly doesn't fit in)"
Yeah, I kinda agree on this.
"no intention of exploring anything new is just... idk."
But why? I mean, In Flames tried, and it was AWFUL
DT tried, and it sucked too...
So why? Yeah, they could maybe go the Trap Metal route, but then again, why? It honestly makes no sense to me ppl wanting bands to become or try something else, listen to a different band that offers whatever scratches that itch.
I don't want Iron Maiden to start incorporating Growls and electronic trip hop into their sound....
It's like eating lobster everyday, but wanting lobster to become pinto beans because you're fed up of eating lobster...

i think there's value in experimenting with your sound, keeping the core stable but adding in interesting new quirks to make it stand out. i'm listening to 65daysofstatic's discog, and they fuse post-rock with electronic/glitchy stuff while also shortening the tracks to a more accessible duration on these first two albums. some of the most unique sounding stuff i've heard in a minute. DT's experiments have all been mostly successful, I think they're doing just fine, In Flames' experiments would've worked better if the writing quality didn't diminish around Siren Charms/Battles
snarky me wanted to make a comment about how most of the non-hits maiden has just ring unmemorable to me but i'm convinced i have a skill issue

Judas Be My Guide is an amazing song!
"i think there's value in experimenting with your sound, keeping the core stable but adding in interesting new quirks to make it stand out."
I don't like Swans or Radiohead (skill issue), and I've listened to all of their records, I've listened to OK Computer about 10 times, Kid A too... I've listened to Soundtracks For The Blind like 5 times, and the same for The Seer... and all those records sound the same to me, yet I don't want Radiohead to start playind dual melodies so they try something new. I'd be pleased if Wu-Tang Clan had released 36 Chambers 4 times LOL.
I might me a simpleton, I don't know.

why? I mean unless your favorite band is AC/DC this seems like a troll question honestly
if you wanna get into radiohead, try In Rainbows, it's by far their best and most accessible record. opened up the rest of their discog for me too, though I def think OK Computer is super overrated

Man the Be'lakor disrespect itt is insane. Been some damn good melodeath releases lately tbh. I never jammed the debut but I'm gonna get on this hard.

"why? I mean unless your favorite band is AC/DC this seems like a troll question honestly"
Nah dude, I was being serious... It applies to AC/DC too, why would I want AC/DC to go proggy on me? Look at Opeth or Tool... it might be just me, but whenever these bands change their style or take huge breaks in between releases, I find myself looking for similar bands..
I'll try In Rainbows again, still, I don't think I'll ever get into Radiohead, just like I never understood To Pimp A Butterfly despite giving it like 20 listens.

I gave to pimp a butterfly one listen through and gave up on hip hop altogether haha. Maybe it's cos I don't care about lyrics
|

Hip Hop is a whole different dynamic of music, but I can understand people who don't like it. To each his own.
I love Hip Hop, but I actually never listened to To Pimp A Butterfly... There are tons of different sounds in that genre too.
Back on topic, first listen of the album was just meh for me, just like the first record. While I do love In Flames early material, this just feel too generic. But again, to each his own

The problem with melodeath is ironically that it's very restrictive when it comes to melody. That's why it feels so tired and dated compared to other subcategories of death metal, which experimented heavily with tonality and rhythm.
This is coming from someone who still jams early In Flames regularly lol.

I don't think it's a stale genre, melodeath albums routinely end up among my favourites most years

I don't think mdm has been solved, there are a lot of bands who incorporate atypical elements while their music still remains mdm, woe of tyrants for example adds metalcore-like aggression and energy (without it being metalcore really), and don't get me started on stuff like shadow of intent

At the risk of some anti-intellectualism, I kinda think overanalyzing melodic death metal is not seeing the forest for the trees.
If I'm looking for genre-defying, cerebral music... I'm going elsewhere. Not to say that this genre hasn't produced some true classics that have escaped the insane gravitational pull of the genre's orbit, but this is very much a genre about whip-ass solos and infectious energy that kills in a live setting.
The Halo Effect is definitely playing the hits, but they are playing them with enough conviction and passion to get a decent ways over the line. The genre has barely changed at all in the last fifteen years. I'm just looking to have a good time with this stuff, and this album delivers that in spades
|
| |
I'm actually rooting for The Halo Effect to some degree, it's nice to see Jesper and the boys do what they love and that energy translates to the music. I just wish it had more of an identity beyond "here's the veterans of the genre showing the kids how it's done."

^^^^ Hey up there you clearly have no clue about hip-hop lets stop talking about it in a melodeath thread. No need to embarrass yourselves.
