"Garm really needs to stop listing dates as lyrics."
That's almost half the lyrics and even a few song titles. I really don't believe we'll ever get a pre-2010 ulver sound back, even something like messe or atgclvlsscap might be pushing it. I do love the combo of forgive us+nocturne #1 but songs like ghost entry are among some of the worst with this sound.

You all are too harsh on this, the atmospheres and hooks are top tier synth pop Ulver. Maybe I like this even more than Caesar, which is the album that got me into the band (yeah I discovered pretty quickly that the real shit waited for me in pre-2010 records). I wouldn't mind at all if they followed the direction of Nocturnes after this.
Right now I'm obsessed with Teachings in Silence, but I know Tore was a great part of this sound.

Been jamming this one over the past few days as a revisit from last year and I reckon it’s full of strong material. Bit of a grower for sure, and not as strong as some of their earlier stuff, but far from a disappointment.

Hollywood Babylon has terrible lyrics lol. And then it is followed by the line “Man is wolf to man, do you understand?” in The Red Light smh.

LOL
man the older i get the less genius i see in ulver. perdition city and teachings in silence are still exceptional works of art but even bergtatt feels goofy now

I'm stil in the discovering phase of their discog, and wasn't super-excited about Bergtatt on first few listens tbh, but it grew on me. I was a bit bothered by its cathedral vibes, but now it is exactly what makes me come back to it. Nattens is better tho.

i had a huge amount of respect for bergatt's sound and if you asked 14 year old me in 2004 what my fav album was i prob would have said bergtatt
but eghhhhh the amateurish charm melted away
nattens is just total mass hysteria

5est of 5s for bm goes to filosofem or blaze i suppose maybe under a funeral moon or shining's halmstad even

I dig the raw sound of Nattens, reminds me of the huge amount of low-fi noisy indie I used to jam around 15 years ago, but this is less wanky. Haven't heard any Darkthrone yet, but yes, Filosofem is the best Norwegian bm I've heard so far. Currently watching this, its very good:

its's a mini series of 4 episodes, if you use Norwegian vpn you can stream it here, but I don't think there's english subtitles: https://tv.nrk.no/serie/helvete
still, it has lots of interesting early footage
no, darkthrone still awaits, but I'll get there
