I wish I had the urge to listen to this again... Some songs here pull the trick... they're on the right path though. I had glimpses of Ghost Reveries.
I think they made the mistake of releasing this in 2024, a year that has been IMO among the best ones ever for heavy music.
Hopefully next year won't be as bad as 2023.

My previous post didn't go through. But I will say that I adore the record and this the first time I've truly enjoyed an Opeth record in over 10 years. I don't think Newpeth era is bad at all. Just not what I wanted.
It is interesting seeing the discourse on this album on here. Some really love it and some don't like it at all. I would say if anything that could be a flaw is that the album is extremely tied to the concept of the record. It is hard to add songs from this to a playlist to listen to individually. It is a record tied explicitly to the other songs. This album likely is in my top-3 for the year.

Right. I made the fatal error of actually listening to Watershed again.
It’s over…. for this album I mean. Absolutely no comparison. The difference in inspiration was even more stark than I’d considered possible tbh
…on a positive note, Oldpeth LIVES!

It's a good blend of old & new stuff, getting a lot out of the 7 paragraphs, especially 1, 4 and 6, but what were they thinking with that last one? Ugh

Newpeth sisters honestly sound like battered spouses rocking back-and-forth muttering "he still loves me..."

Heritage is their best dats-not-da-metulz and almost definitely superior to Deliverance in hindsight
ICV was a respectable effort on release but not sure how it’d hold up now I have such refined tastes

I like the instrumentation of this band, but good God the screams are horrendous.

Akerfeldt traditionally has by far had the best 'screams' in the whole industry for mine. They are a little weaker and not as menacing on this album. .
I for one glad to have them back, not because im a growls fanboy, but because they just add for mine, some real menace and presence. Its another layer of dynamics as well, i love the juxtaposition with the clean.

Good review. And why Opeth is still worth following, while they are not at their peak (which everyone knows what era it was), they still have not gone to complete shit like so many of their contemporaries. It is what it is.

I mean Mikaels age may have aged and his growls have weakened but to say they are horrendous is a fucking stretch
