Haha that's fair, too. I don't think the lyrics to Trouble in Town or Arabesque are necessarily their respective strengths, but the emotion that's evoked in palpable (the outro to Trouble in Town is some Pink Floyd shit, and the "same fucking blood" part of Arabesque hits hard along with those horns). Either way, I'll take them trying any day over saying "well, we suck, so we might as well write basic music".

i wouldnt say thats the mindset i feel like they approached this, or even spheres with. caught an interview they did recently and they really, really believe in this album lol. i think they try too hard to write big message albums in general honestly, both re: everyday life and this but in opposite directions. i guess that's why ghost stories is the last album that kinda worked for me, bc it isn't really trying to be bigger than what it is
also jesus chris martin seems like a disarmingly nice guy lmao probably the secret to their longevity

I'm upset that they really believe in this music lol
I'm glad Chris is a nice guy though

id honestly rather that than cynicism tbh. would probably sully their whole discog for me if they made it blatantly obvious that all they cared about was money but instead its like a puppy looking up at you after peeing on the rug (admittedly the fourth time in a row now someone train this boy)

I have such a soft spot for Coldplay. I can't really explain it or justify it.

tbf you dont need to with me lol i get you. been mostly using this album as an excuse to revisit the old stuff again for the first time in a while and they definitely had something special about them on albums like viva and rush

Yeah, I know I rated it very highly at the time, but Mylo Xyloto was really the start of their downfall. To its credit though, that album had plenty of bangers.
I keep coming back to the band knowing that every album will have at least some redeeming quality. This is the first time I listened and didn't immediately recognize anything as holding any value or promise.
With that said, dissecting this and the Full Moon version and putting them into my own playlists has definitely helped. My pop playlist is a strong 2.5/light 3 and the ambient one is probably around the same. It's amazing how much these songs are helped by eliminating the worst shit and replacing it with some fairly pretty piano-driven stuff from Full Moon.

i both think mylo is not as good or as bad as everyone makes it out to be but it the epitome of a "i have a few bangers and dont really need the rest" album. think thats the first album where they really felt swallowed up by their own ambition
all things considered i think ghost stories is pretty good (ignoring sky full of stars). skipped that album entirely and only heard it a few days ago but i dig midnight as much as any of their best stuff
and yea im never hitting the main tracklist of this one again lol

they've been doing this exact brand of airy pop to diminishing returns since 2014, kinda surprised that Ghost Stories became their formula but that record is innocent

Dammit I heard the end of feelslikemaking love and it felt a nothing song, but not bad. I thought they were better when they were very inspired by Radiohead. I remember getting really sick of their clocks song and some other era of this band.
|
| |
I love mylo but yeah “swallowed up by their ambition” nails it
|
| |
We Pray is absolutely wretched lol, why are they dragging Simz on this downward spiral too
|
| |
this is horrid, Aeterna may be their worst song ever. worse than Spheres somehow, I don't say that lightly
|
| |
Great rev. I look at this album and title and I can't help but feel like Coldplay THOUGHT they were doing some sort of artistic masterstroke here? They just sorta gave up on any uniqueness long ago, so much so that I didn't even realize this had come out until I saw the review hit the front page a week ago

heh i kinda like aeterna, think it leans into a cool sense of ambiguity ish between its key regions thats very un nu coldplay, but i get it since its vocal performance is uh, not ideal to put it lightly lmao
for whatever reason sans we pray and good feelings this j doesnt really bother me as a project and i despise spheres. so it be i guess lol

The only positive thing I can say about WE PRAY is that it has skyrocketed Little Simz' monthly listener total to around 12 million
|
| |
I legitimately had a visceral reaction to Good Feelings and Aeterna which is new for me. Spheres was boring slop but I never felt actually offended by it like those songs lol
we're definitely in the darkest timeline when it takes We Pray to get Simz to that level instead of the borderline classic run of albums she's been on for years. depressing
