I don't think this is pretentions, the guy seems legit
|

it's extremely pretentious but that kind of comes with the territory

Pretentiousness can be good, we can't shit on every single person who's trying to create something ambitious.

Are the vocals really that grating? I feel like they’re not all that far removed from the more experimental side of post punk and/or post hardcore.

It's not that they're grating it's that for me they often don't complement the music but rather are a distraction. It's goofy and theatrical to the point of overwhelming what the band is doing

I feel he's smoothed out his whole approach in a pleasing way, including the vocals

It's not my thing It's why I never really got into Van der Graaf Generator as well, which I think heavily inspired his vocal style

I mean I don't know how anyone could make an argument for this not being an acquired taste - kudos too him because he's got a big audience considering
|

I'm rarely genuinely bothered by "vocals per se" but "the race is about to begin" or whatever from Hellfire is an example of me being really bothered by vocals. so I get it

I really can't see how Hammill could be considered more theatrical and over the top than, say, Peter Gabriel, or other prog singers of that era. Greep has a far less conventional style.

One of those albums where if it’s not in your top ten of the year there’s a good chance you’re trying too hard…but if it’s actually your number one favourite of the year you’re almost certainly trying too hard

This isn't my cup of tea and neither is Black Midi

Album Rating: 2.5
I like all three black midi LPs substantially more than this, though it's clear to me now that as each subsequent black midi release has been trending in this general direction—and, by no coincidence, I've liked each one slightly less than its predecessor—perhaps Geordie is just fast-tracking us directly to the inevitable confluence.
