I was tempted to spoil your fun even further and point out that Floyd don't have a ~song~ called Animals but it feels like I'm just a party pooper now. you may have your Anberlin hate/defense thread in peace

animals by anberlin is only a little better than the architects song of the same name. not a good song

Idk wtf they were thinking with this. As a package this is all over the place and the two new songs suck because of Mattys juvenile mid 00s pop punk aesthetic. Each individual ep I like but this was a bad move.

Serious question: what are we rating here? The songs or the rollout? It's not a loaded inquiry, I'm just genuinely curious. I think it's valid if folks are rating this poorly based upon the fact that it brings almost nothing new to the table and is pointless as a standalone entity. And it's also fair to just dislike the music; but I think people should also understand that the LP is the sum of two EPs with a combined 3.55 avg.

I’m rating the album as a whole. The two new songs are awful. Then structurally the album is all over the place. It’s inconsistent and all over the place so I’m trying to view this as a new album. I love Two Graves and the closer but as whole this just isn’t their best work. They worked better as two eps that did not include anything Matty he suuuucks.

^100%
It's infuriating how lazy this whole thing is. If you isolate the songs off the playlist I posted in the previous page you'll realize I left them (for the most part) in the same sequence as they are in their respective EP's. I only added Matty's songs where I saw fit and it sounds way better already.

Matty is a TERRIBLE fit. Like I said, he has that mid 00s All Time Low aesthetic and it's horrible for Anberlin. Anberlin always did have a pop punky song but Stephen always was a unique vocalist with a cadence of his own.

Like one of the greatest things that carries Cities is his vox. They're weirdly froggy but well executed and totally his own at the same time I love it. Musicianship is great too of course. Adding Matty to the list would take away from that when touring lol

So for someone whose last listen to Anberlin was Lowborn, are people giving this a low score because it's essentially two EPs mashed together ie. voting against the principle of the album, rather than the quality of its songs?

Correct. The EPs are actually pretty good and a nice step forward from the Lowborn sound.
