in the stream he said the piano was his grandmother's and that it's very sentimental for him

This is pretty standard Alcest. In the best possible way.

They will never top Ecailles, but this one immediately strikes me as pretty special itself. Just a couple of listens and it might be beating Kodama for the number 2 slot.

Souvenirs, Shelter and one or two tracks off Kodama is the only Alcest I even distantly care about tbh, will give this a chance when I'm somewhere with decent net again but

@Pika yeah they definitely changed their sound up after Shelter and have been incorporating more of that (and less metal) since then but they still have my favorite style in all of metal.

Ecallies was a once in a lifetime album so I'm kinda glad that they haven't been chasing it and instead went a slightly different direction.

This leans hard into the glow and the shimmer and I didn't realize how much I was missing the focus on that since their first two albums.

On that note, I think it's time for a discog run.

Yeah, Ecailles, for better or worse, is unreplicable. It was one of those which you hear for the first time and just know it's an instant classic. Pure fucking magic.

And I agree, them chasing it would be a grave mistake, because whatever comes out in a similar ballpark will NEVER be as good.

The review is spot on, kinda reminds me of Moonsorrow's Jumalten Aika in that it's like a tour of their discog over the years.

Actually sounds/feels to me like their first album combined with Shelter, with chunks of Voyages and Kodoama and sprinkles of their other albums mixed in.

Not a cello in that song, but I can’t remember the name of the instrument. Singer corrected someone in the chat of their band camp listening party yesterday.

Hell yeah Mongi, this is top form Alcest. Really close between this and Kodama for me. I think my favorite songs from that album (t/t, Untouched, Oiseaux) aren't topped here, but I can see myself listening to this one start to finish more often. The flow here is immaculate.

somehow I feel like L'Enfant de la lune belongs to Kodama or Spiritual instinct, top notch Alcest track nonetheless.

I get strong Kodama vibes from Flamme too.
