“ His worst album in years, BUT
One Heart rocks”
I think Escape of the Phoenix is the worst of the modern era, but I’d agree this is a slight step down from Hymns, Storm Within, Atlantic, and Heartless Portrait.
As stated before, this album quickly grew on me though.

I just shuffled their whole discography recently (in small-ish doses). good time. not for everyone given some of the cheesy concept lyrics but they sure are consistently great songwriters. Recreation Day is the magnum

The Atlantic is peak Evergrey, maybe even The Storm Within. Since then, albums are basically on autopilot. And, I'm surprised Sput ranks this so high. Their stagnation on the last few is quite apparent.
Also, the cover art for ToE is absolute shit.

As the resident Evergrey super fan, no doubt I like this a lot still, however I agree this is their weakest effort since Glorious Collision.

^ First "I think Escape of the Phoenix is the worst of the modern era"....,then "no doubt I like this a lot still, however I agree this is their weakest effort since Glorious Collision. " hmmm that's strange.
I think Theories is a much better album than Phoenix (which is indeed worst of "Hymns" era), Theories has it's own "sound and atmosphere" identity, which is common feature for all their albums since Hymns (and prior to Monday). Phoenix does not have such "whole book vibe", it sounds like a collection of good songs, but you can't "dive" in it, like in Atlantic, Hymns or Heartless...And Theories has such vibe.

Well said. “Where August Mourns” is one of my favorite Evergrey songs of the Hymns+ era, but most of Phoenix is dull. I don’t care to ever listen to that record.
