Saw them last night, was excited since I enjoy this despite not being a big DM fan. $30 for vinyl is the sweet spot for a live show so I picked their new album up.
Vocalist is one of the least charismatic frontmen I've ever seen in hundreds of live shows over the last 25 years. Not much cringier than arms hanging lazily at your side and plodding around the stage begging for circle pits every song. Maybe I caught an off night or something - but if your band is the stay-in-one-spot-and-headbang type, you need to establish an aura if the crowd doesn't already know your music. Get some backlighting and use some fog, goddamn.
Creeping Death frontman was at least enthusiastic and genuine, loved it when he asked if anyone had seen them before and literally nobody responded. He yelled with a big smile "Hey, sick! That felt honest, let's party!" Coupled with their dreadlocked guitarist doing tornado kicks I enjoyed their set quite a bit more despite not liking the music as much.

good. I want it to feel like a death metal show.

shit rocks so hard, ended up really digging the black curtain within the context of the album

@0GuyMan0 Gatecreeper's vocalist was kinda like that at the show I was at, too. Glad to hear the Creeping Death guitarist was still doing spin kicks.

Like if you're gonna do that I'd rather have you do zero banter. Say what the fuck is up at the beginning, and thank the other bands before the last song lol.
But maybe I'm just being nitpicky. They sounded pretty good. Nice performance. Vocals were gnarly otherwise.

Like I distinctly remember Chimaira (similar statue-esque performance) opening for Dragonforce and KsE and coming off as fucking savage because everything was blacked out and they only had a couple white backlights. Comparatively spooky lol.

wretched is the guy who goes to metal shows and stands on the side with his arms crossed and yells at anyone who bumps into him.

"wretched is the guy who goes to metal shows and stands on the side with his arms crossed and yells at anyone who bumps into him."
Rofl I've met that stereotype and it doesn't annoy me at all, way better than moshers and people who push you into the pit.

while cool to see em play on a bigger tour in a bigger venue, Gatecreeper's vocalist's...charisma-less..? aura def works better in more intimate venues. i think? idk. this is what I'm referring to at least when I saw them last:

I have fun as long as I’m not getting crowdkilled by the roided out freak wearing more layers than necessary, yeah
|
| |
the only time I’ve ever experienced that is at shows where the hardcore kids show up which is probably 95% of this bands fanbase so I guess I get it.

Most death metal shows that I've seen in the last few years have all been rather stationary as they're at small venues with relatively smaller bands. I don't really go to any shows at big venues, aside from seeing Behemoth/Arch Enemy/Napalm Death and a Meshuggah show a couple years ago. I've seen Gatecreeper once and they had a great set, with not a lot of movement.
Cannibal Corpse is known for their players basically planting themselves in one location the whole show. There's something cool about that but they also have a big stage presence

Lol, have any of y'all seen Blood Incantation live? They barely move from their spots, especially the vocalist. Y'all talking about a boring front man as if death metal isn't full of them.

Blood Incantation doesn't call for a lot of physical energy imho. They are a band to contemplate and be abducted by their music into another dimension. Many death metal bands call more for contemplative attitudes actually.
Some people just need metal music and bass frequencies as an excuse to liberate what they should be unleashing in the gym or the soccer pitch. Nothing wrong with that but I like to enjoy music in a different way. All the energy is moving aggresively inside my brain, maybe some head wobbling, unless we are talking about physically oriented riffing like some Slayer or stuff like that which would get headbanging a corpse even
I've seen people headbanging aggressively to slow drone segments in some gigs. It was funny from my perspective but I just don't get it.

‘The only time I’ve ever experienced that is at shows where the hardcore kids show up’
Honestly in my experience, at least in the last 5 years, it’s been a common sight at almost every ‘heavy’ show I’ve been to. I think that kind of crowd shows out in varying amounts to anything that has aggressive energy/ vocals these days. Granted, they tend to get checked at more traditional dm gigs but still
‘Some people just need metal music and bass frequencies as an excuse to liberate what they should be unleashing in the gym or the soccer pitch. Nothing wrong with that…’
I agree, but keep that shit in the pit. If I’m catching my breath on the fringes I don’t expect to be targeted and repeatedly punched in the head. I mean, I do expect it now, but I shouldn’t have to
