Album Rating: 3.5
Less melodic and more on the Mr. Bungle side of structure and pacing but the avant garde twist is so similar between both bands. Heavy use of strings, similar sounding bass, experimental, female and make vocalists who use that avant garde vocal style. In a Flesh Aquarium is particularly similar and it makes me think that album was most inspired by SGM.
Album does go hard and is a surprising showing for this genre. It leans a little much on repetition where I don't think it's necessary but it's a strong 3.5/4 and does things thematically I haven't heard before.

holy crap I was so excited when I heard this album was being released, and it's been a rollercoaster since then. Salamander in Two Worlds is such a solid opener that I thought, OK here we go...but after getting through the whole album the first few times, I felt a little let down by the comparative lack of atmosphere and dissonance versus their earlier stuff.
But the album grew on me, as any great album does. Its point of variation is the much broader styles of music they have incorporated, including a slightly more folky vibe throughout, no doubt drawing on Frykdahl's work on Faun Fables. I'm gonna rate this as highly as their first 3, but in all honesty I think that just means I need to go back and bump up the ratings for those earlier albums
