I mean I've always considered death/doom shit like Incantation and Mortiferum. This is way, way different than stuff like that to me. This is like 98% funeral doom.

Hah, agreed. The first band I think of when I think "quintessential death doom" is Mortiferum. (Obviously they're not the originators/pioneers, I just think they embody the essence of that split-genre more or less perfectly.)

This is a little too...reserved? (Don't want to say "slow" but tbh it's occasionally slow lol) and indeed makes me think more of funeral doom than anything else. Reminds me a bit of Esoteric at points.

Never cared for this project, we’ll see if this album changes my mind

Esoteric was my first thought also tbh. Also very similar to Foreverglade by Worm which is also amazing.

Can't we at least settle for funeral death doom then? I'm about to sleep and I need answers or Morpheus won't let me in

The amount of metalheads in this thread confused that death-doom can be predominantly low tempo music is too damn high

yeah this is clearly death doom. putting this back to back with shit like skepticism or thergothon and they are vastly different styles.

I am not a metalhead and can therefore be excluded from this attribution. I simply do not know any better.

I mean yeah but this is very obviously funeral doom esque. In the same vein as Esoteric or Skepticism. At least thats how it sounds to me idk.

Sparagmos sounds like a delicious Italian dish, both in name and on record

Pretty sure the death doom sound is personified by Into Darkness and Transcendence into the Peripheral

And then you can up the death metal or the funeral just a tick in either direction, once you get to stuff like Incantation on one end or like, Mournful Congregation on the other you've gone too far

Agree with @porcupinetheater regarding the Winter / Disembowelment albums, I would maybe add Ceremonium's Into The Autumn Shade to the list

Compare this to something like Drowned from this year, which I consider a pure death/doom release. They're not really similar at all. This is far more on the side of something like Mournful Congregation than it is Incantation. I know its kinda splitting hairs but just my opinion.

Yeah but Incantation isn’t really death doom, and sonically this is going for a similar palette to disembowelment (minus the proper disturbing psychedelia) more than anything else which is one of the quintessential death doomers
