Saw them live yesterday and they were great, but all songs from this era just ... sucked. They were boring, the riffs are some of the most generic stuff I heared in a while and there no melodies on guitar nor keyboards nor vocals and not even drum parts that caught my attention. Seriously, I guess I have to bump this album down a bit. Everything they played from their first 6 albums - only Paradise off Hydra - was great. I was so happy they played The Promise!

The Promise, oh! One of my faves!
But agreed, this one is very very not my thing either.

To me, they kind of lost their magic after The Silent Force. From there they've been trying to break into the Evanescence crowd with mostly unremarkable results (The Unforgiving is an exception). Having said that, there isn't an album of theirs that I don't at least kind of enjoy. Anyway, I think this is their best since The Unforgiving which was way back in 2011. I feel like they're too gimmicky now. They're all about the guest vocalists and whatever the modern sound is in the moment.

I agree there is a certain magic that didn't last past The Silent Force, but I would still include The Heart of Everything and The Unforgiving into the golden era. THoE is probably theor most complete album and TU is a good pop rock record.
I prefer Hydra and Resist over this, honestly. Den Adel's writer's block seems like a deep crisis and she just isn't the same musician as before

I feel that

Yea, this album makes me feel like Sharon listened to a lot of Imagine Dragons and similar stuff

Den Adel's writer block? I'd bet they're releasing exactly what they want and feeling very good about it.

Sharon talked about a huge writer's block before releasing Resist back in the day. She had to do a solo album first before she could write more material for WT. It sounds like something more profound than a simple writer's block tbh, it must have been a crisis of sorts.
I imagine she came to terms with the kind of music she wants to write and now she does exactly that. Nice for her, but it's sad that this music kind of sucks

Didn't know about that, it sure does put things in perspective.
Hope they come up with something different in the future.

Yeah, I've seen interviews with Sharon where she talked about being burnt out on Within Temptation's style and was contemplating leaving the band. She compromised with an extended break and a solo album. I'm guessing that getting that musical style out of her system (and the fact that the album didn't do well) helped her to come back refreshed... plus the band obviously made some concessions on style upon her return.
