New single is very good. It's got a similar vibe to The Carcass King. I don't think this indicates a more butt-rock approach but we've seen it so many times that I understand the cynicism.

God I hate that term. Anyway, the last single was almost entirely heavy, I don’t see how displaying some range is an indication of going radio friendly.

it's less the radio friendliness that turns me off and more the fact that they've traded in the melodic guitar leads for generic chugs

I think that's a pretty fair criticism of Villain Arc, part of the reason it didn't leave much of an impression on me either. Burn is pretty melodic across the board though.
I also think they peaked with their previous sound forever ago, most of their later albums had zero staying power for me, despite having a lot of elements that appeal to me on paper. Union of Crowns cast too long a shadow over that style imo. To me everything they did until this album just felt like a vastly inferior version of that.
There are some more generic elements across the board now, but I still think they sound more engaged post member change than they had for years before.
