I wouldn't characterize anything this band has done as particularly urgent, but that's also like trying to critique black metal by how sunny its choruses are.

this thing is all scale zero stakes
and i am going to assume that was what pitchfork were attempting to articulate

I mean, this isn't necessarily a disagreement, but when were the stakes ever high for M83? They've always been a chill atmospheric band, which is why their fanbase is comprised of people like me.

I didn't even read the review but if their primary assessment is that M83 needs to be urgent/high stakes then that tells me the reviewer probably doesn't understand the band

I vibed with this on the first listen but it was def longer than it needed to be and I only come back to two songs, might bump this down a notch

Great review, puts a finger on many of the lacklustre elements. Personally I ~love~ the first half of the album with its atmosphere and ethereal cinematic feel, but then it really just dies down into something misguided that can't find its footing in my ears. And the title track is just a bit annoying, isn't it?

The review did talk about a lack of "emotional stakes", and to be fair the publication has been very, very complimentary of them in the past (not sure about the specific reviewer), but I don't see a massive difference between this and say, HUWD. It's more spacious and chill, but not hugely so; there's a fair amount of impetus to most of the tracks.

@Appleseed, I agree with everything you said, especially regarding the title track. Although that cinematic, 80s synthpop revival/glorification sound is growing tired on me because I feel like EVERYONE picked that up after he released Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

I think this is better than HUWD personally (agreed 100% that they're of a very similar ilk). It doesn't have a Midnight City or Wait but whereas Hurry Up was largely hit or miss with plenty of filler, Fantasy is consistently engaging (at least to me).

yeah HUWD definitely had far more filler / interludes than it needed, perfect example of "did it REALLY need to be a double LP?"

Best the band has sounded in a decade.

This isn’t amazing or anything but I like it so far. About all I can act for really cause he seems to be done with the Dead Cities-Hurry Up banger after banger streak.

Yeah this is very enjoyable. Idk who Kaela is but why was her part in Kool Nuit agonizingly horrible???

Amnesia is the best song here, but Radar, Laura, and Sunny Boy are absolute diamonds.
