I think this is sticking at the 4 mark, for me.
I agree with the criticism that by making Alex's crooning vocals take front and centre stage, the album is missing the rifts and drumming that made their first two albums and AM so enjoyable. Alex's lyrics are also fairly subpar in comparison to earlier records - even TBHC had some brilliant, playful lyricism.
Having said that, first half of the album is strong. The TBHC sound has been bulked out and the string arrangements are done well. I also enjoy the one-two 'Big Ideas' and 'Hello You' punch towards the end of the album. Songs like 'The Car', 'Mr Schwartz', and 'Perfect Sense' are forgettable though.
Not sure what is in store of the future of the band. At times, this sounds like a break up album. Is Matt Helders really going to be content with soft jazz drumming for a third consecutive album? Regardless, Arctic Monkeys arguably remain one of the most interesting and entertaining mainstream, modern rock bands going.
