Casus Luciferi (Watain), StormblÄst (Dimmu Borgir), The Principle of Evil Made Flesh (Cradle of Filth) are black metal classics in my book, but admittedly they've been on a slippery slope ever since.

As for "the ultimate aggressively marketed sub-par black metal band", I believe this title belongs to Satyricon. Yet somehow these clowns gave us Nemesis Divina, back in the days. And for that, I salute them.

Agog hahaha you are wrong about Satyricon. They are literally one of the best 2nd wave bands and few people would disagree with this. Dark Medieval Times is a literal classic of the genre and an amazing listen

Dark Medieval Times is a fucking snooze fest, LOL.

But hey, opinions...

Dude the title track is legendary. It has one of the best melodic passages ever, you should probably re-listen lol

Considering the latest albums of both bands, damn right Watain is better listening than Satyricon.

But maybe that's just silly old me.

Definitely lacking the personality of their last two. And the production is really weak, nothing hits hard
