maybe pangea is using homogeneity to say the tracks are just boring, which may well be true i havent jammed this yet

yeah i think of homogenous as all songs sounding the same (or at the very least similar enough that you can't tell them apart without looking at the tracklist)

it’s not an inherent problem until you have an album this long, rolled out in parts for no discernible reason, I think that is my main qualm. my fave cuts here are the tracks that have a bit more cause, and I could def live with the length if there was something more in the way of narrative or dynamics. I should probably be more willing to accept I’m just not the audience but it’s just a lil frustrating bc I ought to be!!

that second quote reads poorly bc of the clause, but yes my main issue is the length of the album considering what I would deem to be a lack of variety (wouldn’t go as far as to say homogenous which is something you rolled with), if you can hear the nuance that I can’t then good on ya eight sides

the release strat is a smaller issue but an issue nonetheless, but ultimately it’s second to what feels like a self-indulgently long ass record

i have no qualms against this album (haven't heard a single song from this!). just think can dream pop can be one of the more immersive genres out there and some of my faves from there, i wouldn't consider all that homogenous. But i realize that was mostly all a misunderstanding, so all good! maybe i will try teen dream someday

I auditioned this album together with my boyfriend to find out what is his opinion on it (he's very secretive, no time to enjoy music like us, but at least he's hard working and staid). OK let me finish the story - so, after Once Twice Melody ended (thank fkin God) Spotify started playing this random 90s influenced pop song from Sweden that I've had ironically favorited some 9 years ago. [Un]fortunately I didn't witness this cause I went to take a cold shower by the time 4nd disc started playing. When I arrived back to the living room, wearing only my fuchsia pink bath wrap, astonishingly, David informed me that he has enjoyed the last song the most, I quote "the poppy tune". I was like "ok hun WUT the feck r u talkin bout?!?!" *sketching a cute e-girl expression*. I then verified the play history and started laughing my ass off (see song in link). He mirrored my opinion just about out-and-out, I am proud of him! A magical moment, we laughed and bonded in the heat of the moment. To hell with the Beach House! They've sold out. Not only this new stuff sucks, but there's nothing remotely redolent of their previous material about it. SHUT UP I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR REPLIES ANYWAY. I'm sad, there I said it... :/ Tonight I'mma listen to Myth and Alien Song and Drunk in L.A., sippin', reminiscing on days when they were a great bandg.

The whole point of dream pop is homogeneity sher sher but then that also begs the question if we needed a double album of the stuph

That is not rhetorical idk if i really like this or am rolling my eyes it could go either way rn

Lmao fair play, guess it also depends on the time. Going for a long walk along an iced lake or by a fire with wine and it’d be fucking tops

This is Beach House's best album by quite some margin. The gradual release of chapters was a masterful strategy; it really allowed each song to be fully appreciated within a smaller context, and so when the whole thing dropped everything seemed essential - unlike the new Big Thief.

For me, this is the perfect album. There's variety, masses of depth, and there's magic.

>>>depression cherry is fatnastic and levitation is their best song

yes

>>>What they did so well on [...] DC, enveloping the listener in their uncanny, story-rich dreamscapes (“there’s a place i want to take you / when the unknown will surround you”) has been watered down considerably

YES. went back over DC, 7 and a bit of Bloom to get a check on whether the lyrix had always been this level of copypaste and damn, this album makes those look edgy by comparison.

>>>you could put these tracks in any order and say hey check out my album it’s made of four parts

i think this is true to an extent, especially thru parts 3 and 4...

>>>can you tell by ear where one part ends and the next begins? so like, why

...but yes, could defs cut em up by ear

Through Me is an obvious closer / Runaway is an obvious opener, so that part's ez

Over and Over into Sunset tbqh no, don't think these two are particularly distinct against one another

Illusion of Forever is another strong sentimental closer, feels like a comedown after Masquerade (and then Finale immediately gives me a skip/delete reflex that tells me exactly where i am in the alb)

all those (successful) examples are still opening to restructuring tbh, but i do think their placement as chapter partitions holds water

>>>ll the tracks in an album in fuzzy production flowing into eachother seamlessly like a cloud DREAM

you make me sick

This has a bunch of incredible songs (superstar, pink funeral, through me, runaway, only you know, new romance, masquerade, illusion of forever(best), the bells, modern love stories) with the rest being good to great, apart from another go around, which I would remove. Just the sheer number of great songs this has makes it a 4.2 for sure.

It does lack the warmth that 7 has though (just listen to dark spring), so 7 remains my favourite beach house album.

I know it's opinions and stuff, but I cannot see how depression cherry could be their best album when it only has nine songs and two of them are duds.

I really enjoyed the release method... I got to look forward to a new beach house EP once a month for four months! And it wasn't long by any means. Deserta announced their new album before this and it STILL hasn't been released in full, which I find way more annoying.
