also so glad for the totally organic growth of a mediocre Disney Channel star's popularity to, according to Spotify, fifth biggest artist in the world in a single month

SHEEEEEEEEEESH but agreed, though i wouldn't necessarily limit it just to americans lol

and yeah Ledd her immediate rise has been insane. most people don't even know, but even if you're being fully pushed by the industry, you wouldn't be able to make the number O Rod has because she's been able to separate herself from any and most contemporaries. so her dominance on the chart makes sense, if not was inevitable

exactly, meaning the zeitgeist actually has creative energy to thrust out into the world and emotions to relate to in contrast to most other people that would be in her place

eh, not entirely. the "zeitgeist" of her influences have only been acclaimed and remarked in nerdy music circles like our's. i feel like she took that existing zeitgeist that has been barely breathing, and threw it on top of the christmas tree that is music lol

not sure how accurate that is on either count; it's fairly normal for folks to discuss why popular things become popular in any context (even if we're sufficiently out of step here to need a little extra legwork), and while i'm not sure what "barely breathing" implies, i think you'll struggle to argue that there's been a dearth of emotionally charged all-age breakup testimonials in [insert timespan here]

end of the day, she's a young person speaking her mind in frank terms, which is both a good thing and a not good thing for a spread of reasons. she's got talent, but so do thousands of young songwriters; her writing style doesn't sound particularly distinctive, but neither does thousands of young songwriters'; she came off the back of a huge platform, schmaltzy collaborators and a sympathetic angle, but so did...ah

the world needs a hero etc.

we are all Disney child stars in my heart

some of us just happen to make it big with sad songs about how [sic] uninteresting we are

i think my biggest problem with an artist like this is that no matter how nice of a voice she has, no matter how relatable her lyricism is to those who've [experienced common emotions], it still feels like a hodgepodge of bland pop influences that managed to catch the right wave in the general music industry. call it a zeitgeist if you may, but i cannot take seriously the success of someone with major ties to a monolith like Disney and UMG. it's like calling the success of BTS or Taylor Swift the result of a zeitgeist -- yeah, they exploded in popularity and were major players in a musical wave, but the transparent corporate riggings behind the scenes will forever prod the relentless cynic within me

This cd is fucking slow outside of G4U and Brutal. After the 5th breakup song I was so over it.

like i get that it's the ~point~ but that parallel park line in the first song made me wince

and then the one that gets into super detail about billy joel songs

she seems like a very cool and likable person and i wanted to dig this but whereas the high school angst pop angle may very well work for some it just makes me uncomfy here
