Good review! But I don’t share your cynical view of the album, and I quite like the derivative post-rock qualities on display here. Maybe I’m becoming a basic bastard. I don’t know. I’ll admit this isn’t a 5.

Accurate review, also good.
I’m perplexed by the idea that this is some kind of return to form. I found more individual personality shining through on Luciferian Towers. This is as post-rock 101 as post-rock gets. I guess they executed it a competent manner, but the end result is rather uninteresting. The way they’ve saturated everything with ‘pleasant‘ melodies gives this an indistinct background-like vibe. No tension or grit here whatsoever.

@Norma's comments last page, tbh I agree with you in that the statement feels easy to separate from the music (extraneous branding notwithstanding) - won't lie, the reason I focused on it in that para was half as a proxy to an easy compare/contrast with the rest of the Godspeedverse to wrap things up, and half to have, uh, something to write other than verbalisations of post-rock songwriting tools (bc everybody just loves those). i think it carries a certain aptness if you peek at it, but it's probs unfair to imply it actively detracts from the music - not sure to what extent i did that, but will have a reflecc

I'd say this is lacking in identity, but it is still a really strong post-rock album with drone parts that finally don't feel tedious
I think I prefer this one over Asunder, Luciferian and Yanqui
