Can't get enough of this lately. It sinks its hooks in deeper with every listen.

this entire week I've been absolutely obsessed with just the "children were raised" part in Heroes and Villains. next level shit

Yeah that part's fantastic. The disc on the deluxe edition devoted to Heroes & Villains is a great listen, crazy how much went into that song.

I'm getting to the point where I might get behind that. It has Surf's Up on it after all, and I struggle to think of a better song from anybody. Reading more about the background has really deepened my appreciation for it; just a fascinating story, and a brilliant work of art.

My hot take of the day is that Brian’s fellow beach boys were justified in distancing themselves from him. He was showing clear signs of a psychotic episode due to (I’m assuming) heavy drug use, and if he was left unchecked his erratic behavior would have sunk the band. I see him as a tragic figure in music, but not really because of how people treated him (at least not yet, his conservatorship years down the line is where shit gets really weird), but more how he treated himself and the lasting mental implications of that. I think his story is very similar to Syd Barrett, except Roger Waters gets praised while Dennis and Carl Wilson get chastised.

even finished this would have had nothing on pet sounds / sunflower / surf's up tbh

kinda hard to say for sure considering how a big part of Sunflower and Surf's Up being great is songs left over from this. very hard to imagine those albums if this had been released first with Cool Cool Water and Surf's Up

fair point esp re: the surf's up t/t but id say the bulk of that material is stronger regardless. i could easily see an alternate reality where dennis gets live again as his surfs up closer following til i die and still working really nicely, and cool cool water is a big enough deviation from sunflower that i could see at my window wrapping that. both definitely push each album up another level and are their perfect possible closers for each respective album though, theyre just really high level as is (student demonstration time aside)
also dont think any of the demos ive heard of cool cool water can compare to the sunflower one but the surf's up version here is also incredible

Tried my hand at ordering the tracklist. It's imperfect IMO, especially because I feel like Love to Say Dada's ending should lead into Our Prayer, but I really love that as the opener and didn't want to change it so I just pretend Dada is a reprise. I do like Look (Song for Children) as the lead in to Good Vibrations, which in no universe should be the closer (which as Rowan has said several times is the logical closer).
Our Prayer
Gee
Heroes and Villains
Do You Like Worms
Look
Good Vibrations
Wonderful
Cabin Essence
Child is Father of the Man
My Only Sunshine
Barnyard
The Elements: Fire
I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
Vege-Tables
Holidays
Windchimes
I'm In Great Shape
Love To Say Dada
Surf's Up
(Potential Bonus Track/Alternate Closer: "You're Welcome")

I always listen like this, considering how much is loose suites it seems like the obvious flow to me. it's a nice 2-disc split for symmetry:
Our Prayer
Gee
Heroes and Villains
Do You Like Worms?
Cabinessence
I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
Vegetables
I'm in Great Shape
Barnyard
My Only Sunshine
-
You're Welcome
Holidays
Wind Chimes
Elements: Fire
Love to Say Dada
Good Vibrations
Wonderful
Look
Child is Father of the Man
Surf's Up

I basically choose to listen to the Soniclovenoize 2018 configuration if I want a concise experience, gets the concept down to a breezy 43 or so minutes. If Smile doesn't end with Surf's Up, it ain't Smile.

re: the soniclovenoize tracklist, i kinda do the same thing except i have all the barynard stuff in the track 4 slot and move child is the father of the man before surfs up
