Is it? I mean dm is known to be more homogenous than other subgenres of metal not including doom

bm is way more samey imo but i think i just notice it more because im not as into the formula. obv not counting the "experimental" bands that add in a random sax or whatever lol

I heard 3 bm albums last year and they all had very distinct sounds. I heard about 15 dm albums last year and they all might as well have come from the same band lol. Shit I wish I could hear a sax or even a fucking xylophone in dm - anything other than the same plodding drums and dull riffs and never-once-alternating vocals

I'm listening again and have made it to encased in ice. When you guys listen to an album like this do individual moments or songs stand out to you? Like at no point so far am I yearning to return to anything I've heard. Can't they at least change up the guitar tones or do some cool scream or even put a sample or uncommon instrument into the mix. Twist the knife has a cool intro and then it's like "okay let's go back to sounding identical to every other track on the album"

i mean that tends to be why you wont see me 4.5ing some new swedeath clone, i just rate based on enjoyment in the moment as opposed to originality or anything

as much as i like a record like obscura when the mood strikes, theres like a thousand dm records that are less "experimental" but hit the spot more for me

napalm have always been a bit more in tune to whats goin on, they covered sonic youth, toured with melvins. theyre very hip

Gorguts, immolation, death, ulcerate all have some great material. I'm listening to leprosy atm (fucking great album) and there are actually sick moments worth returning to. Unique solos, intense screams, etc. I get that they blend thrash and prog elements in their music but that's what makes them good. Straight up dm is normally so fking boring

How bout Morbid Angel, i feel like some of their albums are good at not sounding samey the whole way through.

well yes those are very good bands, the kind you should be listening to

eh they dont really, leprosy is "straight up dm" its just one of the most well written

Leprosy seems a bit thrashy to me too but could just be my ignorance of the genre talking. Close to a world below seems to be straight up dm but there's so much interesting shit going on in their songs.

Never heard morbid angel what should I check out

"a bit thrashy" sure but it doesnt really lift any specific elements rom thrash

>Close to a world below seems to be straight up dm

kind of, its "straight up" bordering on technical arguably but also quite dissonant

>Never heard morbid angel what should I check out

altars
