I did end up liking this a bit more than Dying Star but I’m still not massively sold. Mid 3.5. Still reminds me a lot of Ryan Adams.

I would say this is about as good as Adams’ average but Adams had some really high peaks and also usually has a knockout or two per album (obviously my feelings on him as a person are...complicated now, to say the least). Kelly seems like a really solid songwriter but something about his stuff still feels kind of MOR to me. I’m willing to be more impressed though, I do think he has a more classic work in him. Either way I’m happy to have him take over to scratch the itch that Adams once would have since it seems his career is over.

New one is easily his most aesthetically beautiful album. This one has a bit more grit and emotion which anchors it as my #1. I tried so hard to review Shape & Destroy today but I'm having one of those days where my mind is in a total fog and I couldn't articulate a feeling to save my life. Spent like 2 hours re-working the same opening paragraph and eventually rage quit. That's disappointing because I'm going on vacation Sunday-Thurs, so if I can't churn something out by Saturday night then I'm gonna have to pass it off to anyone else who's willing.

Now's the part where I'm honest and say I've been writing a review since I basically woke up this morning and started listening non-stop to the new one since it was released at 11:00

Go back to work on September 1st and am going to miss being able to write reactionary quick reviews the day that albums come out.

I love the line "I am another me at the moment" before poison. So simple but so relatable. 1000 graves, hollywood, poison, wildflower, black magic, and downstairs are so so so good

Yeah the lyrics in general are fantastic on this. Poison is prob my favourite track after one listen, but the others I mentioned all come damn close. Probably the best country I've hears in recent memory; hard to imagine his new album topping this. Love the rawness and emphasis on emption on this a lot. Gonna check out the new one now tho and eventually make my way to dying star
