Her lyrics seem more of a reaction to the world around her than from a deep inner anguish (like say, Julien) which is what I relate to I guess

"If She can do whatever she wants to do / She can go home, but she's not going to is in reference to Julien, it's absolutely heartbreaking, but oh so lovely and hopeful."
Could you please explain the background to that?

Going home in Julien's music is a reference to returning to God, i.e., dying, most likely (given its context) by suicide.

Oh yeah, Graceland Too is country as fuck not sure how I gazed past that on my first listen lol. Second listen is reaffirming my first opinion unfortunately, but I don't think the track ordering does this any favors. Will listen at least a third time before rating but this seems like a comfortable 3.5 with 4 potential. If history is any indicator I'll 5 it by month's end ;-)

never seen an artist try as hard to get on sowing's SOTD list as phoebe with the closer here...

Garden Song is a pretty weak opening I'll admit but it works better in context than on it's own as an apocalyptic prologue

Giving this a positive lean with my rating because of the incredible closer and also because, as a Phoebe stan, I expect this to continue growing. With that said this is nowhere close to Stranger In The Alps, where the melodies are way more memorable, the songwriting is much tighter, and her voice feels warmer and more intimate. Might bump that album to a 5, so at least there's that. This isn't a huge sophomore slump or anything, it's an excellent album, but I'll take her debut over this 10/10 times.

She definitely describes some pretty fucked up relationships.

I really like Phoebe's innocence and voice, but a majority of these songs I was waiting for it to take off or go to the next level, and was left disappointed.
