“ To Be Everywhere merely comes off as motel art. It’s vaguely pleasing, it says the right things, but anyone could have made it.”
Goddamn somebody call the burn ward.

I understand why people love it but it doesn't do anything interesting. It's just a good rock song.

I’m hopeful that the vheissu tour will get them interested in making something a little less safe again

I set Wake Up as an alarm on my phone as a joke, but then I kept it too long and now I hate the song more than I ever have

Wake Up sucks, the rest of album ranges from mediocre to fucking fantastic. I'm not sure how anyone in their right mind thinks this album is below Palms.
Lyrically it's not great (Black Honey really isn't as impressive as the review makes it out to be), but Palms is far worse. The Dark is cliche as hell, and I don't think you could write something more generic than My Soul if you tried. This album has Hurricane, The Window, The Long Defeat, and Salt Shadow, all of which are lyrically superior to anything in Palms beside Beyond the Pines. Even the B-sides EP was pretty weak.
Also the production/mixing on this is the best of any Thrice album, it's impeccable. Palms isn't nearly as good.

Relistened yesterday, I really like hurricane and the window but more of this fell flat for me than I thought : /

I'm in a range similar to this for the album too. It has moments that work for me, but even the better songs still have parts I don't love. Guess they're doing what feels right for them, and I can't fault that, but I still can't help but feel this release misses the mark.
I'm not sure which Thrice albums have aged the best, by this point -- I rarely listen to them anymore, but perhaps the ones I return to most frequently are Artist and Beggars.
I've actually started to wonder if Beggars will eventually come to be seen as one of the band's biggest triumphs. There's still something very warm and welcoming to it, especially the more atmospheric tracks like Circles

!!
Beggars already has a surprising amount of consensus in some fan circles and, having come to see as the most comprehensive thing they've done since Vheissu, I'm v much down for this reevaluation if it occurs
