this >> Amp Heart tbh, though i still dig the latter. the way this paints a sour tinge over youthful skin is so convincingly navigated across the whole thing, more than makes up for what it lacks in songwriting muscle on a song-by-song basis vs Amp. flow and bossa stylings are impeccable too

Idk honestly I find the bossa stuff here a bit tepid, but maybe that’s just my own lived experience (disdain) of playing endless bossa charts of pop songs at weddings and functions coming through. Also this feels very…precocious(?) lyrically in a way that doesn’t quite gel for me like their later work.

This experience reminds me of when I delved into Doof fave "Perry Blake". He has an absolute gem of a trip hop / art pop / downtempo release and I was pumped. The next one was more sophisti pop leaning and yeah, I struggled and ended up abandoning checking much of his work
honestly, even this is progress because Amplified Heart is rather good
I have been listening to Sade's Love Deluxe A LOT, maybe it's working?

and I need to check this, which seems like maybe a rather different kettle of fish... AGAIN!
edit: heard a few Sade albums and nothing compares to LD, no matter how hard I try to be honest. I do like a portion of the 2 albums before it tho

it is your pop-addled lizard brain taking over
a lot of this record does telegraph stagnancy, but in a way that is heartily supported by its emotional wavelength. real baby's first life's a drag (but i mean it this time (takes drag)) hrs; the bossa defs squares with that

The jazz kid “let’s do it as a bossa” meme really ruined the whole genre fr

oh wow yes this is rather lovely. BOSSanova. Struck by how mature it seems for a debut. There's a quiet elegance about it or something. I like it a lot!
(definitely ahead of Language and probably Amp Heart too - for I must re-rank ALL THE TIME)

The first song is so damn good

Indeed!
am I unhinged (?) enough to check out ALL of their 80s material (hmm... wondering if it's closer to this style than Language / if a more optimum balance can be reached)

oh man, which one? That sounds interesting. Maybe I will return to the discog dive at some point because I need some contemplation time...

Intriguing ta. I think five EBTG albums are enough for now but maybe...
I suspect this is solidly third behind Walking > Temp and ahead of Amp. All those four are at least rather palatable tho at an absolute minimum. Bloody good band!

Barely anyone else is here and there remains an absence of other EBTG threads (despite protestations and desires from yesteryear), so it doesn't matter if I clog up the page once more
I am being a lil harsh on ol Eden here, for my own ref - it's honestly in touching distance of 4sville, much to my own shock. There really is something quite consistently compelling about it. Personable.
'Temperamental' would then perhaps get dragged with it tho hmm decisions / needs revising because it contains some serious beats but is an uneven affair
'Wounded' is the easy four 4 now. Stone cold solid 4!
