Super happy you mentioned Portishead Dew. I felt it a lot. Kinda new to enjoying free jazz sections, still some sounds are pretty amazing to be taken out from nothing but organic instruments.

Admittedly, as a Portishead fan, I got absolutely no Portishead from this... but I’m probably misguided somehow.

Well lol I can't prove it to you, but it occurred me a few times and then caught the reference on the rev...maybe Dew disagrees, but for me was some songwriting and the way both the low and the high singers suffer through their interpretation.

And we re all Portishead fans ;)

I do kinda hear it in the last track (the only one Dewi mentioned them in relation to) - the vocals and tempo are kinda Beth Gibbons

i rarely read reviews before listening to the album a few times, not only because i want to avoid any subconscious influence, but it also makes the review richer when i'm more familiar with the songs and the content of the album.

so i finally read your review, great stuff, learned a lot lol. had no idea they once had 28 (!) members in the band.

i knew At Last I'm Free was a cover, but didn't know Blue Crystal Fire was one, too. BCF was actually the album's weak spot for me on first listen, but i loved it the second time around. it's a great transitional bridge between Weekends and Silver Trees.

people might think i'm crazy but a few times on this most recent spin i picked up some very mild jazz-era Radiohead sounds. the cacophonous outro of Silver Trees e.g. reminds me heavily of the similarly dissonant explosion of "The National Anthem" from Kid A, and many of the other various rhythms and tones felt like a blend of AMSP and Amnesiac.

In any case, after three spins I absolutely adore this album, easily my AOTY so far and I could see this eventually going up to a 5.0 for me as long as it proves to have ample staying power.

Sudwoodoo has a rock solid taste in music, who knew?

This stellar review inspired me to check this, but I understand your point about reading reviews in general. Maybe I'll read it a 2nd time.

not sure what the weather is normally like in Osaka, but this year is fucking weird for Michigan so far.

this February we had temps as low as -29°C (-20°F), and this past weekend it was up to 34.4°C (94°F). will probably reach 37-38°C at some point (usually does in late July or early August).

that's some goddamn range if i've ever seen it.

hum indeed...

Seeing the news, Europe has been crazy hot, except for this little corner here (Portugal), which has usually higher "beachlike" temperatures and it has been kinda cold for Summer time. weeeeird

Osaka in summer is straight out hell.

Not only that, we are having a late rainy season this week and humidity levels are ridiculous.

I had a colony of birchmen growing under my beard.
