When Relient K is jealous of your music it's time to call it a career

A good Reliant K chorus

Agreed with the wasted potential of this album. It just didn't have the songs to grab you like their previous albums did or that opener to grab you like Skin Graph from NOTW. They're definitely trying something new, but needed to keep a bit more of their progressive nature.

I agree. Straw man comes close to being an incredible song, but it builds to nothing when a well-placed solo could have made the entire thing. Then there's experimental rockers like Chameleons that are awesome structurally/instrumentally, but offer nothing to latch onto melodically. They always seem to be one aspect short of a great song.

Here's how I would rank the tracklist right now:
1. Straw Man 4/5
2. We Are Chameleons 3.5/5
3. Songbirds 3.5/5
4. Widow's Weeds 3/5
5. Don't Know Yet 3/5
6. It Doesn't Matter Why 3/5
7. Simpatico 2.5/5
8. Freakazoid 2.5/5
9. Neon Wound 2/5
10. Bag of Bones 1.5/5

The Pitchfork review delivered the descriptor I'd been reaching for to describe the vocals here:
'uninspired simpering'

I hate the 'uninspired' descriptor in general.
Like what does that even mean. Were they in the studio with SSPU when they decided to phone this thing in?

The funny thing is the first two albums got correct ratings in the low fifties but there's such a hoo ha if Pitchfork drop a sub 30 score now (think the Black Kids 'Partie Traumatic' 0 out of 100) so the ratings of the last two albums are about the same level, even though the reviews claim they are weaker.

It just means it's lacking in the spark of inspiration (if you just pour tomato puree over a jacket potato tonight that is an uninspiring dinner - this album is the musical equivalent), it was more the simpering part - I was saying 'mewling' but that wasn't quite right.
Simpering. He simpers.

I guess in terms of saying it lacks artistic vision? I could get behind that definition but something about it always rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh lawd, don't even get me started on Pitchfork.

I think they're just saying with 'uninspired' that it's a bit 'plain' melodically, the same old moves, and/or the performance/recording is dulled down and by the numbers.
Bands like this...I just don't know. They start as 'B Team' level to the main event (at best) and then just plummet to Z List level - I honestly don't get, with the amount of alt rock albums in existence, how this band command so much attention.
Pickups have about ten passably diverting tunes over a ten or fifteen year career :/
Fair play, they still have a big fanbase. Lucky duckies.

Exactly how I feel about pop punk. The most overrated and wait for it... uninspired subgenre in existence.

Then again - this is only a shade worse than the latest Smashing Pumpkins album.
They are the same level as their big hitter peers now - it just took those bands sinking to a level where they churn out total dross.

Funnily enough, I've never actually listened to The Smashing Pumpkins.

I probably enjoy one or two pop punk albums but none spring to mind right now :D
