Ah, of the cover art you mean? That would explain a lot.
If not, it would be kind of fishy 🤔

Oh Trif, there aren't any such things as aesthetic value detectors for *cover art*, you silly goose.

Trifo, I think all the "Best New Music" albums are featured on the homepage. The question now is, how do an album get promoted as BNM?

Haha nightbringer!

Yeah but dedex, my point was how can this be considered ''best new music'' if almost no-one here thinks this was best new music? There are loads and loads of albums that deserve this spot more as far as average rating, amount of ratings, etc. are concerned. It can't be based on those numbers.
EDIT:
Ah ok, I see what you mean now.
Another question then: who decides what would be considered ''best new music''? Staff only I'd say by the looks of some of those averages.

I think it has to do with the contribs/staff rating something high enough. Here, Sowing and Chan (the sputnikest of us all) rated it at 4+, so it might get a promotion to BNM. We have no power.

ah, too slow

Haha, yeah, I'd say so too. Which is lame I think. It should be called ''Best new music according to staff''. Because an average of 3.2 based on all ratings doesn't really scream whoooo this is soo gooooooood to me.

'In other words: why has this popped up again on the homepage?'
Let me answer this question with the vague recollection (I may have) and a modicum of guesswork... it's December and I'm pretty sure the powers that be make it so that there's a constant rotation of 'new music' featured (released throughout the current year). I don't know if they are always 'past features' but obviously it needs a review and usually (maybe always?) it'll be a staff or contrib one. This serves as a reminder of what's out there for people who missed the release first time around, it is also the quietest time of the year, so very few new featured reviews would be submitted anyway.

Trif, true, we need to build an algorithm

Forget to check this, will do

Yeah Demon that is the part I do understand. I however do not understand why a very bland album (according to Sput in general) is in the year-end list even though there are so many better ones (according to Sput in general) who are not going to be up there.
It's a very unfitting display of this year, skewered highly to only a couple of staff members. Saying ''this is what we loved'', ''this is a 2019 highlight'' while almost no-one loved this or even heard this.

Ah, could've saved myself the time trying to explain that then, haha.
The less people that have heard it the better, no? Exposure for something that might have otherwise been forgotten? I may check this now, but wouldn't have likely done so without the re-feature. You may be right though, I honestly have no idea.

I guess it's just a feature they wanted to add to put some lesser-known albums in the spotlight. We already have the charts and the Users' top 30 to display what the members truly liked, so the BNM section would have no interest if it was solely based on consensus.
Then I agree with you that the homepage's top 4 four albums do not perfectly display what the userbase feels the best albums are.

I can assure you that you've all put more thought into it than me (my way of saying that this is just meant to be a lax revisiting of some albums throughout the year - not an exhaustive "best of"). Might toss Avril Lavigne up there for the lols.

"my way of saying that this is just meant to be a lax revisiting of some albums throughout the year - not an exhaustive "best of""
Ok, clear. The "best of" would be the end-of-the-year top 30s ?
"Might toss Avril Lavigne up there for the lols."
oh no you wouldn't

Hahaha! Fair enough Sowing, so they're just a collection of records from the year! I always assumed it were the best ones according to some elusive entity (userbase? staff? the Sput-gods?).

I do tend to use BNM and the charts as a guide. This was a BNM inclusion, as you can tell by the low user avg and staff praise ;-)
