I honestly don't understand why anyone would wish to waste their time with this when there is a whole host of superior alternatives that actually do this particular subgenre justice.

Such as? Fallujah, NeO, Sludgde.. maybe? I could be speaking out of ignorance, as I like the subgenre I wouldn't mind listening to something better than this if it exists at all
This is death for people who don't like death, it's pretty obvious what their goal is and imho they pretty much succeed at it - it's not an album I'd ingest in full, but I can hardly count death discs I listen to from start to end

I meant in the general subgenre of progressive/technical death metal.

@LunaticSoul: Ne Obliviscaris, Shadow of Intent, Primordial Throne, In Reverence, The Monolith Deathcult, and Fractal Generator are all atmospheric/prog extreme metal bands that are better than this imo

it's enjoyable, but I think it is getting hyped thanks to that 5 star review

It's not just here to be fair. There always seems to be one album that the bigger metal publications collectively salivate over every year. I guess this is their pick of the litter for 2018.

What's pretty funny is that I never actually listened to Sunbather until last week. I'm not sure why, but I was just never too interested in listening to it. It's not too bad though... definitely overhyped from the controversy it had when it came out, but still pretty good

The reactionary anti-hype towards Sunbather was funnier than the hype. It was just a good blackgaze record with an unusual amount of crossover appeal, but it was getting shit on by the same people who liked Alcest and Woods of Desolation lol

not as good as monarchy but it's still damn good IMO

The whole thing was pretty ridiculous for sure. I actually enjoy the atmosphere of Sunbather quite a bit; very expansive and post-metal influenced. Almost like a brighter version of Agalloch, lol

i dont think sunbather is as good as alcest but i agree w/ u jac

I'd say they're pretty comparable, but yeah, Alcest is probably a bit better

I listened to Sunbather far past when all the 'controversy' happened and it was excellent. Didn't understand all the fuss either way

Sunbather is great and all, but it's not even remotely comparable to Agalloch.

Well yeah, Pale Folklore and The Mantle crush all of Deafheaven's music
|
| |
I still wonder how the hell Deafheaven managed to convince Apple to promote their band for their itunes and ipod ads
