This is close to as good as Nocturnal for me. Miasma wasn't as good as Nocturnal and Unhallowed though.

Best tracks here are Funeral Thirst, Elder Misanthropy, Contagion and Closed Casket Requiem. On Miasma, the title track, A Vulgar Picture and Statutory Ape all kick ass. On Nocturnal, there's only three or four real standout tracks.

Not as good as Nocturnal or Miasma. Its still very good, but they were very inexperienced on this album and it showed. Riffs and solos werent as good as they are now, vocals are nowhere near as good as they are now, and the drums were just ok.

The solo on Funeral Thirst has to be one of the worst solos I've ever heard.

GAH, everyone's going on about how production quality and the like should be factored into the rating.
It hurts my brain. Can I not just throw fives at every album I see?

IMO this album is classic. Production value was garbage, solo's could use more work, and Trevor could've worked out the vocals more... However, the album in its entirety will make anyone want to go slaughtering souls. The brutal demise of life captured within each song is devastating to the ears, and quite simply makes a pit a death trap. Not to mention in the ending bit of Contagion Trevor releases one of the best stanzas ever known to metal:
"The dreams of man engulfed in fire / the world a heap of burning flesh / the end is baring down on us / the gods of mortals lying dead"
Think about everything happening in the world going into 2003. This album was perfect for its time, and this band has stood apart from the other bands in the American Metal scene by harnessing subliminal rage through simple yet melodic attrition of the ears.

I'd rather listen to Nocturnal.

what a horrible band.

After finally purchasing their four albums, I think that this comes out triumphant over the other three. Elder Misanthropy is the best.
