I will say that this is already better than QOTSA's new album, which in itself is sort of depressing.

I feel like this sort of falls into a recurring theme with Foo that has been going on for a while, where they 'experiment' just enough to make it seem like they are doing something they have never done before, but their songwriting process hasn't realllly changed. In fact, they add these elements that differ slightly from their past, but in reality their focus is perfecting their proven formula.
So, it's like if you always loved what Foo does and only love what Foo does then of course this is going to be their best. It just seems like they never push themselves quiiiiiite enough. But, they're hella good at pretending like they do.

You deconstructed their strategy pretty well there. They have a successful formula so why not if it's not broken don't fix it. They add some new elements here and there but just enough to not sound too formulaic.
To be fair, though, they suit the retro stuff just fine. All I want them to do is add a bit more dirt next time and you'll get the above quality record everyone wants them to make. Wasting Light is almost there but not quite. I think the Foos can go out with a bang by making a heavier and more progressive rock album but it seems that is never going to happen so I'll stay on the edge of my seat.
A lot of these bands are successful by doing just that to their fans.

Because hearing the same thing over and over again gets stale. From a business standpoint, its not a bad strategy though.

The overly busy and processed production doesn't do this any favors.

Currently listening and the first three are not too bad. Run has grown on me a bit. Now just waiting for the sky is a neighborhood to end

Oh yeah I totally get how some people just can't get into the Foos, specially since there's been a decline in what they've been putting out since Colour (Wasting Light being the exception). I'm just a sucker for Dave's songwriting, singing and playing abilities.

T-Shirt is a really odd re-hash of Doll

wow not only is this album boring but the production is terrible
|

You know what...up to Run in the track-list and...I mean, it actually has a good pace. Still lots to go but all I can notice with Run is the mix is in-decipherable. There's way too many instruments all playing the same thing and it just adds to this really gross thickness...
Also, Run goes way too long. Shoulda cut the solo and final chorus and it'd be x10 better.

I feel like I expect stuff from this band because of how late Wasting Light is in their discography. but sadly it was a fluke.

Good songs, but the mixing really annoys me. It weighs the songs down in sludge.
