Let's be fair now. The best piece of music on this album (the intro to Uncle Tom's Cabin) wasn't even written or played by anyone IN the band.
And there are some sweetass tunes on this album, but I wouldn't call them 'Great songwriters'. Album would probs be a 4.

The best part about Uncle Tom's Cabin is the song writing not the intro which doesn't really add anything to the song, it's just a cool little intro that is all but forgotten as soon as the song starts proper.
These guys were way ahead of a lot of other hair metal bands in terms of song writing. You strike me as someone who favours impressive guitar playing over song writing in this kind of music (correct me if I'm wrong) so I can see why you might prefer bands like Mr. Big, even if that does seem crazy to me.

I'm not particularly hung up on lyrics. Which is why I like hair metal in general. :D
What I do like is compositional songwriting though, i.e. interesting music underpinning interesting melodies. Warrant comes up pretty short in that department though, IMO compared to Mr. Big.

I'm not talking about lyrics at all.
Mr. Big's song writing was pretty lame a lot of the time compared to these guys imo (Green Tinted Sixties Mind is excellent though). Warrant are one of my favourites in terms of vocal melodies, poppy hooks and well-written (and extremely memorable) choruses.

Naah man. Like I said, Warrant has some songs that I really enjoy like Down Boys and Bed of Roses, but they weren't doing anything melodically that every hair band wasn't doing at the time and that Def Lep and Motley Crue hadn't already done. Big hooks for sure, but super predictable and formulaic.
|
| |
Compared to Mr. Big who were really tearing up the rule book in terms of song writing... ;)
Fact is I think they did what they did (big hooks, infectious choruses etc.) better than most of their contemporaries so it really doesn't matter to me if they were different or not.
|
| |
Well they were generic as hell, even if they were good at setting the standard. In terms of uniqueness Mr Big is STREETS ahead of Warrant and pretty far from generic. Vocally and musically. I can't even say it's comparable.
|
| |
As I've said I don't care about uniqueness in this kind of music at all. Warrant were way better at the factors I look for in hair metal and so for me they are leagues ahead.
|
| |
Damn. I'm kind of surprised people take this band/album seriously.
|
| |
I prob might not like this that much tbh.
|
| |
@deathschool: Why? because of the silly title track that the band hates and would end up wishing they'd never recorded?

JT and me love us some party metal, which is why we keep bumping this.
Also, I don't honestly think Mr Big was really a hair band. They were more a very technically proficient pop-oriented blues rock/hard rock band IMO. Kinda like Tesla I guess but more pop. Warrant may have epitomized hair metal much better and they were certainly better than the Poisons and Nelsons and Firehouses (though I have a soft spot for them) of the day, but it was a matter of degrees.
My favourite bands of the era were Extreme (despite Gary Cherone's godawful vocals) and Mr Big because they had much more unique musical identities and more musical substance.

Yeah I agree actually, it's just that so many people lump them into the hair metal category I find myself doing the same thing.
I like Extreme a lot but if I had to choose between them and Warrant I'd probably still go with Warrant because I think they have better songs (or at least more great songs). Nuno is one of hell of a guitarist but as with Gilbert his style of playing doesn't appeal to me as much as it does you/other people.
I also have a soft spot for Firehouse and even Poison.

Extreme could've been so much better without Cherone holding them back. Extreme I was all round just a terrible album, but while the band stepped up its game on Extreme II, Cherone went from being horrible to just very very bad.
