Grower of the year for me. What I first identified as a weakness (the pervasive ambiguity of the sentiments) turned into a major strength. A compellingly messy take on relationships and self-worth with endless nuances to explore. And the hooks fucking rule.

lyrics are actually the most appealing thing on here, not cuz they are intelligent but because they call out misogynistic shit without holding back, like damn

r&b records typically have women playing roles that are palatable to men (seductress, forlorn lover etc.) but sza does something peculiar here. she puts her neuroticism as a woman on full display, the expressions that straight men dismiss as "crazy" and "overemotional girlfriend." we’re accustomed to art where storytelling serves to further understanding of those unlike us, but this album goes further by demanding identification with the psyche on display. in that regard I find a commonality with romaplasm (and would argue they're underrated on this site for similar reasons)
