An album of straight 3's and 3.5's to me means every song is either good or great, no skippable tracks. That's worthy of a 4 overall score...it's definitely not mathematically sound, but neither is music criticism.

The hooks are generic at points (the title track is evidence) but I enjoy them so meh.

Fair enough, just thought it was ironic because you're all about the maths :p but yeah how do you even rate music I mean it is arbitrary tbh. I love the shins too, just partial to their first few albums - especially inverted world

I gave up teh maths long ago

The Shins scored my 2010-era indie coming of age, so in my eyes they can do very little wrong. Too many memories associated. Very few think Oh, Inverted World is a classic so that alone tells you I'm in the minority with these guys.

I have Chutes Too Narrow 5'd

I love The Shins, but goddamn the fantastic lyricism is just not there anymore. It makes me sad. However, I like how quirky this is.

nah, it's easily their best album. it's excellent front-to-back, whereas the three albums after it are loaded with great content but have a lot of padding imo

I'm re-listening to Chutes now to re-rate. Had it at a 3 =/ but that rating was from forever ago

Chutes and Inverted are both excellent but they're far from personal favorites. Overall I think The Shins are one of the more overhyped bands of recent years. Not necessarily overrated, but they are a bit more popular than I think they really deserve to be.

Chutes Too Narrow is the epitome of beautifully written, heartbroken, witty indie pop. IMO.

To each their own though.

"Overall I think The Shins are one of the more overhyped bands of recent years."

I agree with that actually. I love them for, in my opinion, being sort of the "fathers of modern indie-pop" (so many bands strived to emulate them after "New Slang" hit airwaves), but overall they're more of a personal band to me with lots of quaint and quirk value. But the fact that they top itunes when their albums are released is still a little baffling even to me.

Re-listening to Chutes btw and not sure what I was ever thinking. It's an easy 4 and probably a 4.5, falling just behind Inverted as my favorite Shins.

Yeah idk how you disliked Chutes if you love Inverted. They are very similar.

It's when Wincing came in that things got a bit over-produced.

Yeah Chutes is probably my new 2nd fave Shins...then Wincing and Heartworms tied for that next spot. Not sure why but Port of Morrow never clicked with me but then again it's been as long as I've listened to that as that original Chutes rating, so guess I'll revisit that now too.

Idk I'd say Chutes is closer to Wincing than Inverted in terms of production. Inverted is pretty lo-fi.

FlagAsh will hate me but I never thought Mercer was that great of a songwriter.

Ultimate middle hitters of indie rock for me, and really that's not the worst thing to be. Same bracket as The Strokes, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, White Stripes, etc

I think the idea was you'd only profess your undying love for these dudes to get to Portman's poon :/

That's how it started and then I found myself captive by the band's spell, not Portman's. It's a designed trap for teen boys I reckon'.

Are you serious? The man uses such clever imagery and metaphors to express emotions.

"After that confrontation

You left me wringing my cold hands

We shared some information

We might not recover from

And I watch your convictions

Melt like ice cubes in an ocean

You were so poorly cast as a malcontent"

Oh well then that movie doesn't matter in terms of Portman using her sway to bring attention to the Shins.

Unless there's a Zach Braff effect...
