even as a piece of writing i hate it tbh

the line "Would you like a cigarette? I didn’t think you would, the trials of life have yet to jade you to that point of self-denial." made me not want to read further but i did anyway and w/e i'm ok with it

kinda reminds me of my (1 and only) review for i became a shade by seoul, there are obvious differences in style and purpose but the spirit's there
nice album

you shouldn't be presumptuous and pushy when you're attempting the conversational tone
like this feels like snide's talking AT me rather than TO me
it's somehow domineering and disaffecting

What I'm confused about is in my writing what's considered pushy / presumptuous? I wasn't attempting to portray that in the tone of the review, which probably means I fucked up somewhere in that regard.
I know Johnny gave a specific example, and I could kinda see how that could be pushy, but are there any other examples you all could think of?

basically you assume a kind of faux-omniscient character, but if i have to be specific:
there's the whole cigarette tangent and then the weak weak weak pseudo-philosophical "broken man" bullshit and the seeming hyper self-assuredness of tone and the various other degenerations into really weak projection and so on and so forth

So the problem was that the narrator shouldn't have taken the whole "life's been shit to me, so listen to me and what I say" approach? I was basically trying to convey the speaker as a metaphor for the warning signs of death, as sort of a "passing on the torch" kind of approach. I guess it came across as rather pretentious.
|
| |
i guess it's the kinda "do you feel what i feel? you should" underlying tone maybe, and the 'broken man' thing is a bit tangential
|
| |
"So the problem was that the narrator shouldn't have taken the whole "life's been shit to me, so listen to me and what I say" approach?"
that's a large part of it
there's an awkward clash between the conversational tone and the domineering approach you take
it feels perpetually uncomfortable
like i can definitely see what you were trying to do
it just didn't work
at all
tbh

@Steak: Oh yeah not a lot of people liked the WSTW review.
@Taste: That's not good if it feels uncomfortable, that was literally the exact opposite of what I was going for, yikes.
@Space: 00 00 00 0000 0000
@Ephemeral: Just had a nice warm Blue Moon earlier tonight so I know the feels man.

check Magnetophonique - Lush Islands/ Illusion of Paradise
perhaps even warmer and more endearing than this

I'll give it a whirl! I've still got a shitload of albums to check.

This was as heavy as a ton of bricks but about as dainty looking as a ton of feathers. This review was a bit too...emotional I guess? However it was still really interesting.
|

Perhaps it's just a bit too flowery, like I feel like i'm talking to a dying anime mom or something. The idea is good however.
