Bon Iver > For Emma > 22, A Million
Still like the new 'un but the other two albums each have at least three songs I prefer to any song here

It has the highest number of his best songs on it - all the first 5 and Calgary are perfect for a start
This sounds so similar to that album in tone I don't really see how someone could love one and hate the other but I guess people put a lot of stock in production detail

For Emma, Forever Ago > 22, a Million > Bon Iver, Bon Iver [2]
Doof what do you see in Bon Iver, Bon Iver that makes it your favourite? I barely enjoy it

I don't care about production detail lmao it's just the songwriting on s/t is so empty and vapid, it tries so hard to sound big n beautiful but there's absolutely nothing at the core of it, unlike the other two where Justin's emotions shine through superbly

I think 'sweetly nostalgic' as an atmosphere/emotion suits him better than 'woman gone left me and I'm suicidally sad'. I think the former mood is tougher to pull off successfully than the latter too.
Plus the instrumentation on the self titled is right up my street. It's fundamentally very very pretty throughout. For me it hits a difficult balance between sounding rich and still being more subtle than a predominantly acoustic debut. No mean feat.

"I think the former mood is tougher to pull off successfully than the latter too" which makes it all the more impressive when he does so

You read my comment wrong, I'm saying the s/t is the album with the nostalgic feel
I guess I never totally bought into the 'man, this bearded hipster is laying his soul BARE' hype for the debut, it's an accomplished acoustic album but never got me blubbering into my hanky. So I personally preferred him aiming for something a little less sad times. For Emma was a teeny bit too on the nose for me.

Right, I see what you were getting at. still doesn't mean the s/t executed those themes in a way that wasn't hamfisted as hell, especially given how subtly the themes are intertwined throughout this album, s/t by comparison is hitting you over the head with WOW THIS PLACE WAS SO GREAT I MISS THIS PLACE

I can see someone finding the S/T cheesy, emotionally and with the choice of instrumentation. I think he flirted with that intentionally. It's just a matter of personal preference.

You don't want anyone talking about Bon Iver on a Bon Iver thread?
If we were screaming at each other it'd be capitalised, it's a civilised discussion

Two men arguing over which is the prettiest Bon Iver album? I don't see it

I think the thesis of this review is on point (that the album is far from a significant departure insofar as it has antecedents), but there's not much to the review beyond that point. There's not a whole lot of engaging the album's themes or the reasoning for Vernon's sonic exploration.
Even with all the gripes, I'd say this is a pretty good review. It's good to have you back writing reviews, Arcade (I know you did an MIA review, but still).
