The price is wrong, motormouth, remain indoors, and flatline are the only ones I would put on a best of playlist. They are some of the best songs they have done. It's crazy how far they have gone from the amazing first album though. That was a game changer, especially for me since it was my first really heavy album.

mk ultra rules, besides as far as heavy songs its infinitely more listenable than something like the price is wrong which goes on for way too long
anyway prayer position, habitual line-stepper, remain indoors and marigold are my favs here

marigold, absolomb, and lune are my top three
seriously, if the album were much more like those three track this could've easily been a 4 but there's too much shit on here.

You didn't like Motormouth?

It is more listenable than "The Price Is Wrong" agreed. Why they chose to open this album with the one-two punch of that one and "EAT SHIT MOTORMOWWWWWWTH," I have no idea.
Not a big fan of "Habitual Line-Stepper" and "Prayer Position" is on the fence for me, but I dig the other two.

"Lune" is sooooooooooooooooooo bad, I don't understand why people keep praising it.

I'd say it's probably because it's the most different, at least compared to the rest of the album imo. Yeah the lyrics suck but there's worse that these guys have done...like mk ultra for instance.
That being said, maybe not the best closer.

Musically, it's not an abortion, but man:
"CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE? YES, I FEEL THE LOVE" ugh

""Lune" is sooooooooooooooooooo bad, I don't understand why people keep praising it."
The climax though...the re-occurring melodies in the album leading to that crescendo. One of the few songs the band actually jammed out when writing it instead of just piecing riffs together and you can hear it.

hey The Mowgli's's "San Francisco" is a jam

Not sure why you guys think the first two songs are the worst here... they're mediocre, but not offensively bad. Probably 80% of Juggernaut is worse, not to mention all the pop stuff here. Sorry guys, Marigold is utterly WRETCHED, between the top 40 chorus and terrible orchestral intro - the synth tones on this record and half-assed 'neoclassicism' (when will metal bands learn that playing arpeggios on tonal progressions =/= classical or good... how about some counterpoint or developmental forms guys) are painful.
|
| |
I don't listen to these guys much. I really liked Marigold and the end of Flatline. I'll check out the whole thing soon

I've always been a fan of Bulb. I hated it when he started putting vocals on his instrumentals. Spencer has gotten better at singing and stopped sucking so much, but songs that jammed hard before vocals were completely ruined when Spencer jumped on them on the first record (Icarus Lives, etc.). I always thought that there was more possibility for this band if they never had a vocalist. Spencer has had shining moments (Scarlet and couple others I can't remember) but IMO he has too many misses, especially when it comes to vocal melodies matching the music. Too many times I've heard him go flat on a part and wondered why they didn't do it over in the studio. I will probably like one song on this album, much like the rest of their discography, but it's frustrating that they can only push out one or two decent songs in a whole LP, especially as a fan of Bulb when Misha was churning out good tracks like it was nothing.

agreed sexpoi, there just doesn't seem to be a unified band vision or artistic goal
like they rip on Meshuggah a lot, but everything meshuggah does contributes to a singular artistic goal... the rhythms, rhythmic feel, tones, vocal style, lyrics, harmony choices, etc. are all contributing towards expressing this fear of dehumanization and alienation. it's super focused. What's the artistic point of taking some of those elements, simplifying the rhythms, removing the motivic development, making the harmony diatonic, and putting pop melodies sung in an emo style over that? Just seems to be 'cool riffs bro' and nothing further than that
