-- Had Abigail and Them been released after this one, I'm not sure if the former would still be the showpiece
I humbly beg to differ, imho "Them" is second to none in the King Diamond discography.
The reason is that for the first time, the ferocity of the concept is in c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e sync with the ferocity of the music, which has nothing to do with '80s metal, as it is way ahead of the mentioned decade.
The other King Diamond instances where the said sync works wonders? The last three songs in Spider's Lullabye, the hugely underrated Voodoo, and The House of God which is creepy as hell, in places.
Musically, Abigail is a frame of the band tentantively leaving '80s metal behind in search of a more progressive demeanour.
The said sync in Conspiracy is almost absent; imo King is narrating his story on top of a musical substrate that sounds like an amalgam of Black Sabbath with Dio, early '80s Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads/Yngwie Malmsteen shredding.
Still awesome, but below "Them" and probably below "Them"'s virtual satellites.

Disagreed, respectfully of course. Plus, the production on “Them” is utter trash. No low end whatsoever.

Agreed about the sound work, but man, the music is black metal before black metal
-- it makes the album hard to listen to.
It's not that bad, but it could be a lot better. To my ears, it could sound like Voodoo

It's the worst sounding metal album that falls in my wheelhouse. But yes, the songs are amazing. Invisible Guests will never get old.

The sound work of Abigail just as bad, probably worse than "Them".
