Johnny hasn't awarded a 5 on the site so I'm taking that as evidence he's a tough crowd and adding a .2 to his score in my mind :D

how do people who aren't staff give 4.5s and 5.0s so damn fast
i wish i could digest an entire record in a single sitting

I listened to the album 10 times in 20 hours before reviewing

I don't have any other Radiohead albums rated since my Radiohead "phase" was long before I knew what sputnikmusic was, but I'll probably sink into their discog again soon. and hmm I have no idea what my fav RH album is. I think Amnesiac is up there with Kid A and Ok Comp

"“Burn the Witch” is a case where the bombast of the message is more important than the execution implied; the gravity of the circumstance is trivialized a bit by the bouncy, orchestral arrangements and Yorke’s lofty delivery."
Is this a negative critique? I enjoy that aspect without considering it trivializing.

not exactly a "negative" critique so much as comparing it with the closer. the song is called "burn the witch" yet has a lighthearted tone that makes the concept seem less severe. it's actually executed kinda cleverly, even if i don't really care for that song in general. i get the sense that, as the song continues, Thom cares more about the sound of his voice then committing to any task at hand, which is almost a total opposite to the closing track

Burn the witch works less every time I listen to it. Without the video it's really quiet bland to me.

I love this record. I honestly think it's the most cohesive release Radiohead have made.
While it's a lot low-key, it's not like it KOTL which really was disappointing and underwhelming.
This record is so groovy which is odd given how fucking subtle it likes to play.

" the song is called "burn the witch" yet has a lighthearted tone that makes the concept seem less severe"
I kind of consider that a cherry on top with a lot of songs. For example, I love Mr. Bungle's "Pink Cigarette" and "Vanity Fair" that much more for the same reason. The juxtaposition of subject matter to musical tone is fun to me.

yeah i don't mind the delivery - again, was just comparing the two songs and how they prioritize

I've never been much for the band, so I found that very welcome. Although, people seem really interested in discussing the opener. I'm much more intrigued by "Glass Eyes" and "The Numbers".

Utterly fantastic review.
But come on, we can't have the King of Limbs be an entire point higher than this from the Sputnik staff. That'd be ridiculous.
(And yeah, I know Pots)

King of limbs has 25 minutes of top grade Radiohead and 12 minutes filler - rated as an 'album' a 4.5/5 is way too high.
Trim the fat and call it an extended 25 minute EP or mini-album and just maybe I'd say it's a 4-4.5.
But as an album held up against their other work? No.

yeah Glass Eyes is absolutely gorgeous and the buildings strings convey the sense of rising anxiety superbly (emphatically unlike how BTW tries to convey the same thing)

Burn The Witch has been the biggest earworm for me so far. I love the change in vocal delivery on Identikit. Glass Eyes is beautiful. There's so much on here to be admired.

What Doofus said
Radiohead are my favourite band but I can't fool myself into rating TKOL anything higher than a 3.5

This has better production, lusher instrumentals, stronger lyrics, prettier melodies, and a much more consistent atmosphere. Did I miss anything?

@fishing: I may do a counter point eventually just because I love this record and it will be hard not to write something about it. But not for at least a few more days, or if I don't get around to it then, weeks. I doubt even when I do slap something together that it will be as good as this review. As much as I disagree with the score, it's as well defended of an argument as any.
