yeah, usually it's kind of dangerous talking about it as an umbrella term because it's probably the most diverse musical genre. Idk I picked up all this stuff from Deviant

why is this website such a piece of shit? serious question. it's obviously not due to too much traffic, and bugs haven't been fixed in years so it's not like the servers are down for maintenance, so yeah... what in the actual fuck?

I think that to use a review of a certain album to talk about some artist's career in general and to explain you general feelings towards his/her music as a whole is not out of place, taking that you don't do it on every review of the same artist.

The same as 96% of everything that's been released since 2000 dude.

Style over substance imitators with no cut and thrust just exploitation of a vacuum left by the greats of the past. The only 'talent' is that of self promotion.

"Ed production values are important, for some electronic genres they're perhaps even the most important concern, but for an artist of this stature operating in the field of pop/hip hop the argument will always feel like a cop out to me."

Producing/Sampling etc. isn't as narrow and bleeds over into songwriting, and if you look at MBDTF for example there are a lot of songs that would be pre-average if they weren't so ingeniously crafted.

I kinda get where you coming from, playing instruments really well doesn't make a good song either, but I don't think there is a meaningful distinction to be made between someone who is a god at the guitar and someone who is really great a producing.

@ Gyro: Yes, it's been terrible in the last few weeks.

Ed I see how the term 'producer' can be a lot more broad than just the technical mixing and audio manipulation you'd traditionally think of. It's the 'big picture' stuff too - collaborator selection (this is key here), the arrangements, the overall 'feel' of the work, etc.

It's important for sure, but I still find it strange to be held up as the main draw for an artist such as this who is effectively operating in the realm of mainstream popular song. His production has at times been on or near the vanguard but not to a revolutionary degree. Yes it's improved some of his more mediocre songs and made an album like 'Yeezus' stand apart as pretty unique but...within this sort of genre it doesn't make for classic albums to my mind. You need something stronger in terms of pure songwriting and lyrical content.

I'd say look at another act who had groundbreaking production like Wu-Tang Clan, you think of '36 Chambers' and if someone asked why it's a classic I wouldn't just say 'they're great producers', first and foremost the overall writing is incredible, then you have the personality and skill in delivery, then you've got the fact they had a unique perspective and something to say...and finally it's married to great production style.

Saying production is great is sometimes the same as saying it 'sounds excellent' when really it would impress me more if an album just 'is excellent' - they're not the same thing

I mean I get what you're saying doof, I think how most fans feel is that Kanye is amazing when it comes to making an instrumental (or was, anyway - just listen to Runaway, Devil in a New Dress, Hey Mama, countless others) but that he's pretty terrible as a rapper, hence the fact that he's often heralded as a great producer. I think great songcrafter might be more accurate, but neither term applies to this album very much

Thanks Arcade

Row I think my problem is Kanye is such a huge artist and heralded as a genius in some quarters but people still shy away from actually labelling him a great song writer and I believe there's a reason for that...and I believe that's why he's lacking in some important regards and why I'm underwhelmed when people use the 'great producer' label to argue the case for a mainstream artist like this

It's because he's a provocateur and fantastic at stirring up a love-him-hate-him feeling in the people. When it comes down to it he can make a tune but can't rap to save his life - I would've much preferred if he'd spent most of his career making tunes for other rappers and did his own stuff on the side (with some exceptions like 808s and Heartbreak which is a fucking classic, but I digress)
