this is pretty dull. then again, I never saw the appeal of this band/genre.

Thanks Egarran.
"I think it was the first time I heard female singing to this kind of music."
Same here. The Gathering also did a year later on a larger scale on Always and then it became a trend. One Second was also the point where I stopped listening to these guys but by then the best death/doom albums had already been released so I guess Paradise Lost were trying to evolve. Didn't like the direction they were heading but I appreciate their adventurous nature.
"the only great change is Holme's vocals. I guess it's what we needed."
I think that Tragic Idol was closer to Gothic and now with this one it's like they came full circle.

After Shades of God, As I Die was almost a pop hit.
Every time I saw them live, Holmes was visibly annoyed with its popularity. But he was always a grumpy old man, yelling angrily at the audience. I suspect this new musical darkness pleases him.
When I abandoned these guys, I discovered MDB, so all was well on the doom front. I still think MDB is a way more interesting band.
*Runs away*.

Dont know about that, but Turn Loose the Swans is my favorite album of all the Peaceville Three.

MDB rules. Can't compare them cause, like I said, this was my first PL album. m/

MDB is a highly interesting band can't deny that and the addition of violin was also a great element of their music. Highly consistent discog too.

Can't really choose one over the other, but I listen to PL more often than MDB. They also need to bring more details about their upcoming album asap.
TLTS is up there with Icon as top Peaceville album.

Add The Angel and the Dark River for me as well. The thing with MDB is that I have to be in a certain mood in order to jam their stuff compared to Icon and Draconian Times.

That's true. I can listen to PL in any mood, something I cannot really do with MDB, early Anathema, or other bands with doom elements.
And the fact PL usually has fairly standard song structures adds a catchiness/accessibility that goth/doom metal doesn't have (nor should it, necessarily), while still being as dark as the genre tends to be without falling into some wannabe dark-metal that many modern goth bands end up being. That appeals to me a lot.

Hopefully this will urge more people to check the 91-95 era as Nero suggested, along with the other recent ones.

Pretty obvious you either really like this sound or you really don't. Can't say this isn't good cause it is. Very well executed. But it does nothing for me.

Idk dude literally every song here is great. No filler or boring tracks throughout the whole album.
Respect your opinion though of course. m/

I gotta try this, even if I've not dug anything I've heard from these guys.
|

Am I missing something here or what? The opening track is pretty darn dull and the vocals are so weak.
Hmm, I guess I'll stick it out.
