I've been meaning to get into this guy for a while, figured I'd start here. Listening to this now and it's pretty sweet so far.

Does music always have to be "exciting"

Did you listen to this? I wouldn't classify is as "pleasant." Quiet, soft, sure. But this is so deeply saddening on many levels.

I think my ranking goes:

1. Fourth of July 5/5

2. Death With Dignity 5/5

3. No Shade In The Shadow of The Cross 5/5

4. The Only Thing 5/5

5. Should Have Known Better 4.5/5

6. Blue Bucket of Gold 4.5/5

7. All of Me Wants All of You 4/5

8. Carrie & Lowell 4/5

9. Drawn to the Blood 4/5

10. Eugene 4/5

As you can see, every song is amazing though, even the ones I ranked last.

Cool ranking

I think I would have Carrie & Lowell last

I really really like Eugene and Drawn to the Blood, but I don't think any songs are below a 4.5

This is a really exceptional review. When I recommend this album to people I will advise them to read this too.

I've enjoyed a lot of Sufjan material but I've never been a huge fan. I'm only a few tracks in and this has a hold on me more than any of his past material. Huge Elliott Smith vibes.

Sufjan is right up my alley. And yet somehow I've never really loved any of his stuff. idgi

Second para first line "This was an agonizing record to for Sufjan Stevens to write."?

But great album and great review.

So this album is pretty neat.

I think it's great overall, although my favourite sections of the album were when the piano and ambience took over, and things got really intimate. I feel like if he had made the whole album out of those bits, with folky elements spliced in here and there, then I'd probably be obsessing over it.

Then again, it is him playing from the bottom of his heart, and I'm usually a sucker for more emotional ambient music, so idk
