After a few listens Life's a Gas and Planet Queen grew a bit, but I think 3.5 is prob the right score for this for myself

Has made go back and jam 1970-74 glam Bowie songs a lot lately lol

"So many songs were like “here’s some hard rock riffs and mellow sexy vocals to woo the alien girl” for like 5 songs?"

I did check out of curiosity and this comment is conveniently placed and agreeable (2). We may able to resurrect this dead dino yet, but idk

relistening to glam Bowie certainly seems like a better use of one's time

The Slider >>> this and all glam Bowie aside from Ziggy

The Slider is a better T. Rex record, I'd even argue Tanx is as well. BUT - this has some real glam evergreens, undeniable slabs of pop perfection.

re: where to go, I would parse through some Tyrannosaurus Rex to see if it's your thing, it's more oddball psych folk stuff. The first T. Rex record (self-titled) is a nice fusion of the two eras and if it has Ride a White Swan tacked onto it, even better. There are a few solid songs on every post-Tanx album but none of them are really essential.

Jeepster, Mambo Sun and Ripoff are all classics yeah

Cosmic Dancer and Life’s a Gas are quite good too

I wanna love Planet Queen because the music and chorus structure are awesome, but those lyrics are so like idk stupid but not in a fun way, but rather a lazy cliche way? Like I feel like Bowie would’ve at least tossed in some space puns for max alien girl immersion. Bolan’s like “I guess there’s a flying saucer over there in the corner, let’s fuck”

Also, as great as Ziggy is, I like Hunky Dory the most out of glam Bowie lol

Bowie spoiled us all with his great lyrics

I feel like stupid lyrics are very much a requirement for glam. Something so hedonistic, outlandish, even unbearably camp. Bolan knew his audience quite well and at his very core was writing out-and-out pop songs, and I think that's what makes T. Rex so enduring. It isn't out to revolutionize anything or make any grand statement, it's something that's pure fun. I would even argue Aladdin Sane owes a massive debt to T. Rex, because the muscular, overtly-sexual attitude of that record does evoke some Bolanisms (complete with a remake of Prettiest Star, the original which featured Bolan on lead guitar).

A bit of an addition to this is Bolan had a serious case of leaving some of his best material off his albums. I like Tanx but some of the singles he put out prior to Tanx would've elevated it to the status this and The Slider enjoys. Children of the Revolution and 20th Century Boy are some of his best songs and it's ludicrous they were just singles, but that's just how it worked then. (Hot Love would've been great on this album, but again, it was a non-album single)

hmm never been massively into Hunky Dory now come to think of it but Aladdin Sane is a sneaky fave of mine (Ziggy sits somewhere in the middle, i.e. v good)

not sure whether this is relevant / helping regarding T. Rex here, but whatever I guess

Agree with Fripper that Bolan left some great material for singles-only status. But this album and The Slider are killer regardless, even the crazed psych folk stuff hits. T.Rex >> Bowie. But lyrics always come second for me. Although, that said... I really dig Bolan's wack lyrics.

Upon further reflection the opening run is pretty good. It loses steam quickly tho starting with Lean Woman, never really regaining the lost momentum until the closer. Life's A Gas is solid mind, certainly less ineffectual than anything the previous cuts have to offer

I’ve come around to Planet Queen a little just because the chorus is so fun

Agreed that Lean Woman Blues is a weak point. I’d say it’s the biggest stinker here easily

You guys seem to like Monolith a lot, but it sounds kinda empty to me and heavily resting on the backups where aren’t like mind blowing?

Otherwise Demon and I are in agreement prob
