you have yet to cite the riffs that give you this deja vu feeling, otherwise any accusation of banality is unfounded. this deja vu feeling didnt stop you 4.5ing and uneven structure, have you never listened to fellsilent or meshuggah?

Do I really have to do this? Jesus christ...

MK Ultra: 0.10 -> Veil of Maya's Subject Zero 0.10

MK Ultra: 0.27 -> Josh Travis' playstyle taken and applied to Periphery

The Bad Thing: 2.52 -> there's a similar breakdown somewhere in Meshuggah's 'I'

Four Lights: -> Heart of a Coward's entire last disc

Most of all there's a lot of 'dejavu's' from PII as well. I've heard someone saying this is a 'polished'

version of their past disc wich I kinda agree. I didn't like PII either

Februus is a jaw dropping record with a magnificent ambience, an amazing vocal delivery (that's really

worth of praise) and crushing riffs that came out of nowhere. If Uneven Structure's next disc is a

Februus' rehash I'll be the first one to complain

I always thought Periphery's djent riffs were noticeably different from most djent riffs.

Uneven Structure is awesome though

a lot of those songs, mk ultra in particular, was written like ~10 years ago so thats not a good comparison

dissonant riffs arent a Danza/josh Travis staple, and as ins says, it was written long time ago, and one generic 2-minute instrumental track sounding slightly similar to a generic metalcore band is nowhere near notable

dont get me wrong, I adore Uneven Structure, but to call periphery's riffs guilty of being similar when US is far closer is an unfair accusation

Even if it was written 5 years ago, its just now coming out so it is a fair comparison, even if i don't really agree. Subject zero sounds very sterile and mk ultra to me sounds very lively. They might have a similar groove - dissonance thing goin on but I dont get that vibe at all, still dont agree that like 2 seconds of a breakdown sounding like part of a 20 minute song that basically is a breakdown makes an entire >80 minute record stale

Uneven Structure is a good band but the approach they take is so far different from this band that they might as well be different genres. I put them in the "post-metal catagory" really even though they go beyond just that. Theyre not really a band to emphasize individual riffs

Well done review! I agree with everything you've said here. Spencer's vocals are by far his best on these albums. The instrumental variety is great as well.

The Bad Thing is superb, one of the greatest songs Periphery have ever made
