You never said Metallica, you said metal sub-genres, and black album isnt really a good indication of metal sub-genres. Dying in comparison to how popular it used to be, and it defenitily wasn't as popular and it's even less popular now.

yeah by 'thriving' i didn't mean airplay, which is why i threw metallica there as a response. metal wasn't dying though, there were a lot of new styles arising in the underground which have their own large followings

Sorry Atuma, I overemphased the term 'dying'. Metal has a very loyal following, and there was certainly a lot of things happening in the underground. What I'm saying is there was a time period where it was on the airwaves frequently and it was a lot more lively and more cultural you didn't have to look to the underground.. it was everywhere.

traditional 'heavy metal' was dying....and died.....the sub genre's were coming about paled in comparison and were fucking ass.....art dude you would've been a hair metal fanboy just like everyone else

grunge and then the emergence of nu metal fucked it all up,,,,,even bands like slayer were trying to mimick it

atrocity it was

They'll never touch that popularity at its time period, but what the hell do I know. I feel like I shouldn't have to say traditional. When I say 'popular' I mean it was popular, not a sub-genre and not underground because well that ain't popular of that scale whatsoever.
