May I ask what is so scientifically correct about saying "when metal bands try to make their music more accessible, it usually goes horribly wrong"?
When a band goes "accessible" it sure loses many fans. But it also atracts many more people that will then search for related bands, creating a snowball effect of music consumption.

Accessibility can be a good thing when done right, Alec. But in Peripherys case, it caused their sound to stagnate. The instrumentation and vocal performance on this disc is miles below what it was on their debut.

It can be a good thing, but don't take that to mean it's always a good thing. Just depends on the circumstance. For Periphery I don't mind it, but then again I haven't felt like it's really that much different overall. There are still the djent heavy songs. My only qualm is that I don't like much of the clean singing on this.

The vocals get irritating at times and there's too many ideas crammed together, I can only really listen to a couple songs at a time before getting a headache.

Many of the non singles were quite good though. When Spencer stops trying to sing in insane patterns and melodies and just screams over some crazy ass riffs, it works pretty well

I get the feeling that most of your discontent comes from the fact that Spencer doesn't growl throughout the album. Vocal
cords are just like any other instrument: there are many ways to play them. And even if you don't want to admit it, Spencer
knows how to play them well and in many different ways. A singer who only growls is no singer to me. Its like a guitarist that
only plays power chords while another one does solos in the pentatonic scale... boring.
By the way, your review only skims through the album. You concentrated so much on what you did not like that you forgot to
mention that Alpha/Omega are concept albums. You never mention that there is a storyline to follow. Do you even know whats
it about? You also never mention the HUGE improvements on production and guitar tones. There are so many elements to this
album that give a reviewer the opportunity to develop a great text. However, you had to write the typical self-righteous album
review where the author thinks he actually knows a thing or two about music.

yeah anyone saying the production is bad means to say they don't like it
shit is crisp beyond belief
|
| |
where does anyone say they only want growls?
I for one dont mind clean vocals at all, but only when they are done properly. Spencers cleans are over the top, obnoxious and sound completely off 90 % of the time.
I love monuments for example, good cleans and growls that fit the music perfectly.

Well lyrics appear cringy or overall average so I wouldn't focus much on the concept

I agree that Chris Baretto fits perfectly in Monuments! His voice fits perfectly in the new album! However, if you find Spencer's voice annoying doesn't mean that he's a bad singer. I have seen Monuments live once and Periphery three times already. I have to say that Spencer's voice is much more trained than Chris'. Of course both miss a few notes on stage, but Chris has to create new melodies for parts he can't reach while Spencer nails all of them.

The fact that these are concept albums is completely irrelevant to the musical quality which is what my
review was addressing.
Why don't you write your own review if you feel like you can do better? I addressed things that I liked
and things that I disliked in the review. I named several songs that I thought were somewhat enjoyable.
I'm getting a strong impression that you either didn't read my review or you read a few sentences and
decided you disagreed with my criticisms so you didn't continue.
I don't claim to know everything there is to know about music. But based on the multiple unintelligent
comments you've been leaving i'm 100% certain I know more than you do. There are several people in this
thread trying to explain why you're an idiot but you just continue spouting off with stupid stuff.

yeah, because that your full comment wasn't self-righteous at all

Im sorry but this is a webpage for album reviews. An album encompasses music, lyrics, concepts, artwork, production, etc. If you review an album through tunnel vision and ignore 90% of it, then you can expect that people won't pay attention to 90% of what you write. Its just incomplete. Better luck next time!

not every album review needs to be a 3000 word essay - that's why different people offer their own perspectives. they hone in on what they liked most, and what they disliked most. it's doesn't have to be a complex analysis. I mean, by your logic, should a movie review describe every single scene, the layout, camera angles, lighting, etc etc... of course not. the film review would end up being longer than the movie itself. the album review should give a glimpse of what to expect, and the onus is on the listener to check it out themselves and discover whatever else peaks their interest. if it takes me longer to read the damn review than it would to just listen to the album itself, something's wrong.

Agreed with Johnny.
I'm trying to figure out what the album concept could possibly be. The lyrics I've noticed don't sound like they could possibly be concept based.
