i didn't actually look i was expecting higher tbh, but then again you gotta be a sell out pop rapper to get above a 7.5 from them and it's been like that for years now.

TKID and What A Terrible World are both totally solid imo, but I enjoy The Decemberists most when they embrace their theatrical/avant garde extremes.

The recent stuff shows a well-oiled songwriting machine but it doesn't captivate me in the same way say, The Mariner's Revenge Song does.

For me the difference is that I really have to be in the right mood for their more theatrical stuff whereas The King is Dead I'm happy to listen to any time. I will concede that that album has a lot of nostalgia for me (and it was the first of theirs that I heard) so I'm obviously partial to it but I still think it's genuinely their best work.

Where are the bands making clever, creative, and catchy music like this right now? The latest album lowkey sucked but I'll always go back to this stuff. Accordion and pedal steel are the keys to my heart.

“California One / Youth and Beauty Brigade” is a serious contender for my favorite “long song” ever, it’s just perfect.

Leslie Ann Levine and Here I Dreamt I was An Architect are such incredibly vivid and evocative tunes. What a way to start off an album.

With the exception of The Hazards Of Love I find The Decemberist's sound to be fairly timeless.

This album is so good, honestly could be 5/5 territory if it weren't for "A Cautionary Song"

I paid twenty-five cents to light

A little white candle

For a New Year's Day,

I sat and watched it burn away,

Then turned and weaved

Through slow decay
