Yes but Raven is some much more engaging than this. This is a lot more derivative.

Deliverance has a lot of amazing light sections though, it's just less diverse or proggy overall

Yet A Fair Judgement is an Opeth song with no growls and heavy guitars done right

The only prog album by them that was good was Damnation. Heritage and this both blow a big one.

"If Opeth fans only cared about mehtul then Deliverance would be considered their best album, but it suffers from the same disease as this and Heritage in that it hinges too heavily on one end of the spectrum."

Deliverance is their second best. BWP BARELY beats it out.

"There's just a sad sense of gothic magic that's had its black candlelight flame blown out by a hippie's bong smoke pervading the album."

Aside from the last two tracks, this is disappointing. The last two are really good though.

It Happens. Sometimes even good bands miss it and some stay like that for a while.

Only heard it once but I really like what I'm listening. Then again I'm not an Opeth fan so this might be the reason.

It just sounds like you would find anything boring that Opeth does if it doesn't include metal riffs and growls. I just equate most people saying boring as "needz more growls" though if that's your opinion I can respect that.

Maybe I need to listen to their older stuff again but they sound more technically proficient on this release. Their song structures seem just as "progressive" as their older stuff just no death metal parts.

Mastodon is a band I guess I could see using your argument for since I feel like their new music is not as interesting as their older stuff.

Great review. I would say this was the biggest letdown of the year for me, and if I was expecting it to be good after the crapshoot that Heritage was, then it would be.
