"where I'm from people are just as likely to listen to metal and punk as they are to listen to pop."
uhhh yeah that explains about 110% of our discussion. there are little pockets of metalheads around New England but Aerosmith is about as heavy as most folks get around here.

Well, one of the upsides of high population density with small room is lots of diversity within small areas. Well, plus Germans have had a knack for metal and punk for decades so it penetrates our society a lot more.

I'm finding that you guys and Sweden have a lot of good shit. Gamma Ray is totally sweet, at least the four albums I've heard so far (Land of the Free through No World Order!).

we have a relatively high percentage of metalheads here in finland but the majority still has an awful taste

Depends on what you're looking for, really. The U.S. has great death and thrash metal and meanwhile also some real BM gems. Scandinavia is the cradle of Black Metal. Germany and France always had a very versatile "underground" BM scene. Germany and England also have some oldschool Heavy Metal. England has boatloads of Doom, Germany has some more classic Thrash. Scandinavia and Germany have their fair share of Folk/Viking type stuff.
@Artuma: It kinda makes sense, though. Because if you don't get into the lesser known stuff from the start and don't belong to the type of people who is willing to spend as much time on music as people here do it's likely you'll end up with a lot of genre-specific mainstream. Not to mention the time all the trial and error takes.

in fact i'm not really a fan of finnish music in general (power metal meh). also the best bm bands tend to come from norway and sweden
|

Again, depends on what you're going for. I haven't heard too much good recent stuff from Sweden and Norway and the old bands have tapered off, disbanded or changed styles.

well yeah i've noticed that but the thing is that they can't stand anything but the current biggest mainstream hits

Again, if you're deep into that it makes sense because it becomes a self-reinforcing system.
I mean I only got into black metal very early on because I was relatively open-minded in terms of music and a metalhead I met rec'd me some stuff.

yeah the only metal my friends listen to is like Avenged Sevenfold and FFDP, so you can see why I
never bothered with it. the latter is like the epitome of negative metal stereotypes
